5 weeks on mirtazapine, up and down

hi, ive been on mirtazapine for 5 weeks now - 4 weeks at 30mg, i had the usual drowsiness to begin with, though didn't get the huge appetite, i just started to get an appetite in week 3 and also felt calmer and brighter, though in the past week all of that has gone and im back to having low appetite and mood and anxiety is back - what should i do ? im sleeping well which seems to be the only bonus atm, im thinking of adding in a low dose ssri, rather than increase the dose - has this worked for anyone? any advice appreciated

yes its very interesting - i dont think ive seen any reports of the ven / mirt combo not working though as you say it seems like they dont tend to be added at the same time, also i hear the combo can poop put sooner rather than later...i was thinking of eventualy adding a low dose of escitalopram - ive not tried it before but it seems to have less side effects than other ssris and be more effective - i also like that the doses are so low with 10mg being the theraputic dose - any thoughts on this?

yes, likely a blip. your brain chemistry isnt where it needs to be yet for 3 good weeks. when you start most anti depressants, it happens. you normally get a good week, then a bad one, and the cycle repeats itself. gradually the good periods last longer, and the bad get weaker and dont last as long. you need at least another 3 weeks, before you can make a judgment. you should be fine. wait another 3 weeks at least.

you are welcome. the adding mirt to give a combination is very successful. not many drs know about it, and pyscs either dont, or are reluctant, as unsure about doses. doses are easy, dont go above 22.5mg of mirt. mirt combos are the most successful anti deps. originated in usa. made a massive difference to me, when mirt was added 6 months ago. my pysc wouldnt do it. id done the research, and my gp did it. my pysc was worth it initially, dont need him now. have persuaded 5 people now, 4 out of 5 are doing great. none of their drs or pyscs were aware, but researched it, and were desperate to get them sorted, so okayed it. the 5th one is a friend in usa. her pysc did it, but got excited with results, upped mirt to 30mg, and she went downhill after that, and added other things, that made her worse. she changed pysc, who stopped mirt, and tried other additions, has got worse. still trying to help her. one lady in uk is a nurse, her pysc almost fried her with a massive increase in ven, close to being hospitalised. she badgered them for 10 days, to reduce existing one and add a low dose of work. it totally transformed her. all the best.

for support. the nurse i helped with adding mirt to ven messaged me. doing so well, pysch wanted to discharge her as an out patient. she didnt want to, just for peace of mind. she was that close to being admitted, back in june. she has a young pysc who doesnt know what shes doing. she wanted her to increase ven from 225mg to 375mg. told her no, only do 267.5mg. she compromised, and did 300mg. still fried her within 2 weeks. she had to really pushed for the mirt to be added. you have to be careful with drs and pyscs, they have no understanding of doses. if you find you arent quite sorted, you can ask for an increase in lex to 15mg, and if possible only take 12.5mg. or an increase in mirt to 22.5mg. you can break tabs in half. my pysc did get me to appreciate small dose increases, with long gaps in between. much safer and more successful, no chance of over shooting, and getting worse. just wanted you to see how well adding mirt can work.

thanks for that nigel, so how long was she on the ven + mirt combo before it began to work? i have been finding my anxiety difficult to manage over the past few week - though it does easy off quite considerably in the late afternoon which is a bonus, so hoping i'll get a good spell again soon, luckily my pysch is quite good and knew that mirt should boost the escitalopram and also is an advocate of giving the meds time to work and small dosage increases - for me one of the biggest bonuses is that it has completely stopped my nausea - which i had thought was just as a result of my anxiety - but whatever it was it has gone..
