5 year old daughter with Osteomyelitis

my daughter is 5yrs old, she was playing and fell with her cousin.
Next morning she woke with high temperature and sickness, i put this down to just being unwell. Sunday morning when she woke she was still feverish and coming out with delirous comments, looked at her thigh and noticed very tight, took her to our local community hospital who sent us to A & E with a suspected fracture.
They took X rays and nothing showed, but they were not happy with her well being so addmited her onto the childrens ward.
They diagnosed Osteomyelitis straight away and arranged for an MRI scan the next morning.
She also had blood poisioning and was taken down to theatre, they drained her leg.
Her crp blood count was over 200!
She didn't really get any better over the next 2 weeks, her crp only coming down slightly to 127.
She then started to go downhill again and when repeated the bloods they had gone back upto 191 so another MRI scan was done which showed another collection in her leg. We were then transferred to Birmingham Childrens Hospital where they repeated the surgery twice more.
She improved and her bloods finally came down to 10 and we were allowed home with oral anti biotics.
She gets very tired and alot of stomach cramps which i put down to her medication.
Would like to hear from any others if they have experienced this awful infection.

It took 6 weeks to dignose what i had got and then spent 5 and half weeks in Hull Royal Infirmary which i was later tranfered to Birmingham Royal Othopedic for a biopsey. They could not grow anything from it and sent us back home.
After spending many years in and out of hospital i was sent to Oxford Nuffield which i later had another biopsey in April 2006. From this they grew something and was able to put me on anti-biotics which i was on for 6months which helped with the pain i got. Making my life more normal again.
After having a good spell in my illness i went 18months without having any problems until a few weeks back when i started getting pain back.
i have being back on my anti-biotics which releve the pain for me.
i am currently on, [b:12c8ae1fae][u:12c8ae1fae]Ciprofloxacin[/u:12c8ae1fae][/b:12c8ae1fae] and [b:12c8ae1fae][u:12c8ae1fae]Ritampicin[/u:12c8ae1fae][/b:12c8ae1fae] I am also on a strong painkiller which has helped me in my time which is [u:12c8ae1fae][b:12c8ae1fae]Indomethacin. [/b:12c8ae1fae][/u:12c8ae1fae].
If you have any more enquires email me at
Hope it helps

She is back doing ballet, jazz and swimming.
We are due to go back to Birmingham at the end of next month where she will have another x ray.
The last one she had 6 months ago you could see that the holes that she had in her bones were healing nicely just a tiny hole left.
There only concern is that because the infection was so close to her growth plate it could affect growth of leg but will only know when she grows a little more.
Anyone who is going through with this terrible infection just to let you know that there is light at the end of the tunnel it can be a slow and painful journey as it was for our family god only knows it was touch and go for 2wks, but she did pull through and you would never know now that there was ever anything wrong!!
It is still in the back of my mind especially when she gets a fever or sickness as these were the first signs of her illness, but i'm sure in time it will get easier.
Thanks to all who have responded to message, forums like this are a great help when you can share your experiences with others in similar situations.
Will write again once been back to Birmingham at end of July.

i will pray for your 2yr old daughter, as that is what you hold onto at times like these i know.
my daughter had it in her thigh and she had to learn to walk again with the physio dept in Hereford and Birmingham hospital.
She had to use a frame and when she walked unaided it still took a while for her to stand straight again.
Don't push her to soon as that is what they did to my daughter straight after op expecting her to stand on infected leg, when transferred to Birmingham they said was too soon.
We went to Birmingham for check up last wk and Jade was discharged after 12 months of check ups.
Because infection so close to her growth plate they didn't know if it would affect growth of leg.
Last X ray looked good so hopefully they caught it in time.
She sometimes says her leg aches a bit but from reading other experiences i would say that was natural.
She now does everything she did before without any affect.
Be postive i know hard cause i wasn't at all. It is so hard to watch your child suffering you feel helpless it is out of your hands but she will come thru!!
How did it happen? Please keep me updated on her progress.
