53mm kidney cyst

I had a CT scan on my gall bladder about 14 years ago that was clear but it showed that I had an small (31mm) aortic aneurysm and multiple liver cysts. I have yearly scans on the aneurysm that has now grown to 38mm and about five years ago they noted a ‘small’ Bosniak type 1 cyst on my right kidney. In 2013 it was reported to be 35mm and another two small ones. Last year I mentioned it to the consultant (who is a kidney specialist) at the Hypertension Centre  I have been attending looking for a reason for my erratic BP readings and in November I had a kidney MRI scan. His only comment on  it was that my aneurysm is small and that I have a slight narrowing of the renal arteries. I forgot to ask him about the kidney cysts.

Recently I have had numbness in my feet that has made walking difficult. I had a lot of neurology tests that did not find a cause and it was simply said to be idiopathic neuropathy. As the numbness only starts when walking and I have no pain or pins and needles I have blamed it on my lumbar spine that had become painful. I arranged for a private CT scan that showed disc problems and it also showed that the kidney cyst is now 53mm. Quite an increase in two years.

Does anyone here have a similar size cyst and has anything been done about it? For the last two years I have at times had slight pain/discomfort on my right side when moving and at times when laying on that side in bed.

I have just had a kidney cyst of 6cm shown up on CT (Up from 4.2cm 12 months ago)

My Urologist said it is a benign simple cyst, and of no concern....just 12 month follow ups. I hope he has given me the correct advice!

Like mine your one has grown a lot in a short time.

I have an appointment with a urology nurse this week for a flow test for my BPH. I will mention it to her. I just got the CT scan report on Thursday and have not seen my GP about it yet. I can see it on my DVD copy of the CT scan and it does take up quite a big area.

They may be harmless but I have discomfort in the area. Have you googled the condition? Check on kidney cysts and radiofrequency ablation.

My Doctor phoned me this morning about my CT scan results.

I mentioned the increase in the size of the cyst. He like others said that they are harmless and said that one of his friends who is a kidney specialist has several bigger than my one.

I mentioned that I have discomfort on that side and will speak to him about it again at my next appointment.

Hello Derek.I have been seeing a urologist for over 30 years for various kidney problems. About 6 years ago he told me,like Mal, that had several benign cysts in my right kidney which were of no concern. Each time I go for my check up,I mention them. My latest was last week and he said the same~like Mal, see him in 12 months.I,m re~assured by him. But,he did notice I have disc problems and thought this was the cause of the pain. Especially on movement.. Hope this may help. Dot

Than you for your input. Doctors so often speak of referred pain that one is left wondering where it is actually coming from.

I always look for the obvious causes and others like the neurologist I was referred to start looking in vain for obscure genetic causes.

Usually after my annual aneurysm scan I have a 15 second appointment with the consultant who says little change see you next year. This year he retired and his sucessor takes a more sensible approach of not seeing you if there is little change but his letter did not mention the cyst.

Did he refer you to anyone about your disc problem or tell you to live with it? I had an orthopaedic consult and he said that surgery often worsens the problem. The neurologist said that he has back pain but does not trust surgeons to do anything.

Derek,If it's any consolation  ,my Urologist said that if he were to scan the whole of the population, a good percentage (over 50%) would have kidney cysts and not know it..I sometimes think a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. My back, ,neck, pelvis and shoulders have been paining me for years. I've told my GP over & over and asked to be referred to a Rheumatologist,at least for a diagnosis. He's refused. When I saw Urologist, last week, I was so sure the pain in my back which is really bad was my kidney. I was surprised when he said kidneys & bladder were clear and come back in 12 months. But he commented on my posture and asked why I couldn't sit down (I lock,so it's easier to stand). He then looked at my X rays over the last few years and said that my  back "wasn't right"(what a surprise!) He then asked what other symptoms I have and  who my GP had referred me to. When I told him that he hadn't,he said he'd be writing to him fo recommend I see a Rheumatologist. At last, but what a convoluted route to get to see one. So that's my position at the moment. In the meantime ,I've looked on this site and can identify with many of the posters. They're all so helpful, too. So,until I see Rheumo,I've diagnosed myself with Fibromyalgia. My final words to him,as well as a big thank~you were for him to assure me that it definitely wasn't my kidneys and he said that kidney pain would be constant and mine was worse on movement. I don't know if any of what I've said is helpful to you,Derek. But I hope it has been Dot.

I had a urology appointment last week for a prostate problem. I mentioned the growing cyst to the urology nurse and got the harmless answer.

I agreed and said that I had a kidney MRI at another hospital last year and no problems were mentioned but that I now had this pain for the past few months.

She is arranging for a kidney ultrasound scan
