5th metacarpal fractur

my 9 year old son fell off his bike on Saturday and fractured his 5th metercarpal. He was put in a temporary half cast and we were back at the fracture clinic this morning. They took off the cast and strapped his little finger to the next one. It is obviously very swollen and sore and I am worried he is going to knock it and damage it. Is it usual to not put a cast on this fracture?

I would think it is usual..because they want to keep the fingers straight as possible for best healing....A cast...he could bend them too much...poor bugger!

When he had his temporary cast on his fingers were also strapped, together. I am just worried about how vulnerable the actual break is. One afternoon at school and it has already been bashed by someone's shoe ??

Hi...then ask the Dr. for an extra brace to make it more visible that his arm is injured...and they may sell them at the local store near you?
