5th metatarsal fracture- 1 week dekayed visit to hospital

Hello, I’m 24 years old. I twisted my foot from a tiny step and kept walking for around a week, limping and frequent pain shocks. I went to hospital after a week where they informed me about the fifth metatarsal base fracture which needed operation, they did put on a cast. On the day of operation the main dr. came in and informed me that my bone wasnt dislocated so they won’t operate unless it does dislocate and it’ll be healed properly in 3 weeks time (on internet it was said 6 weeks in articles, I’m totally confused) . I asked if I could put on weight on the foot, she said yes I can. I’m confused now, putting weight on it ,while cast is on doesn’t pain at the moment. Shall I continue normal activities like attending university classes etc.? What are chances for it to dislocate in a cast?? Please help me! 😢

Hi Malik
I’m confused too 😏 more I read more confused I get . I’m exactly six weeks after I stepped on rock or stone walking my dog . I been getting X-rays almost every week with no healing . My doctor said no weight on . If by next Thursday still same I’m going for surgery I can’t be wasting more time .
I don’t know what to tell you about what u dr said 😤I’m sorry 😐

Are you in a plaster cast or is it one of those Velcro boot things? It's weird that they told you it was okay to stand/walk if you're in plaster - I had a temporary plaster cast on for two days in between going to A+E and being referred to orthopedics, and I was under strict instruction to keep my foot off the floor otherwise the cast could crack. After they gave me the boot I was told I could walk in that, but I didn't for a couple of weeks (until it no longer hurt to put weight on my foot). It's unlikely to dislocate in the cast unless you fall and knock it really hard - I was worried about the same thing but it was fine!
You should be able to still attend university classes as long as you can get there/back okay, and the buildings they're in are accessible enough (I was on crutches for six weeks when I broke my foot so getting around campus was a nightmare!) If you get in touch with your university's disability office they might be able to offer you some accommodations, like covering the costs of a taxi to/from classes if you can't use public transport.

Thanks for the reply... I’m in Germany. Also, walking in cast isn’t producing any pain.. I’m just 24 years old. I hope my next X rays shows healing , worried

Well you are pretty lucky I guess I got a cast for 2 weeks & believe me it was impossible to do anything with a cast .
I’m 34 very active , outdoor person but I guess with no so good bones . I didn’t know until I got a blood work done .
Everyone is different, everyone heals differently. I can’t wait to go and walk my fur baby 2 hours again . 😃

Thanks for the reply. I wish you a speedy recovery!! Well I definitely agree that everyone heals different! I’m basically using my heels at the moment to put up all the weight to it. Hopefully, I have an X Ray coming up, I hope things go well ..
