5th Metatarsal Fracture

Looking for some advice.  I recently visited the podiatrist due to foot pain and after x-rays it was determined that I have a 5th metatarsal fracture. The doctor was a bit less than helpful and left me with many questions.

My fracture was not the result of trauma and I'm not sure how long it went undiagnosed. The x-rays also showed regions of bone growth so the prescribed treatment was a boot with air cushioning and crutches for 30 days. I have been using the crutches as best I can outside of the house but don't really use them indoors unless I'm walking more than a few paces. My question is basically is this ok?  The doctor did not mention total NWB.

Also are crutches really that necessary?  Is the boot sufficient if I limit my walking?  Appreciate any input anybody may have.

If your doctor prescribed the boot and crutches, it sounds like she wants you to be NWB - but call ASAP and ask.  If so, I suggest renting a knee scooter.  It is much easier on your body than crutches.  And they have a basket so you can carry things around.   I used one around the house for 8 weeks following surgery.   Good luck!

sorry but that "friends" doctor is an idiot! I have no clue where you are but, I like specialists that are NOT podiatrists. I go to an ankle and foot orthopedist  but, I am fortunate to have an amazing choice of docs in Richmond, Virginia!!

Update:  Went back for two week follow and the doctor told me there was evidence of 30% bone growth. I came armed with several questions and was told that I did not have a Jones fracture but rather an avulsion fracture.

On Day 28 I returned for second follow up. I was told I could wear a surgical shoe without crutches or boot. I can go back to normal after two weeks in surgical shoe.

Full disclosure:  I stayed off of my foot as best I could but did do some limited weight bearing as necessary.
