So I have had my hard cast removed on the 13th July and so far so good. The orthopedic surgeon said my x-ray were good and that I am allowed to start walking. For the first ten days I walked with the crushes. For the last 4 days i have been walking without the crushes, my physical therapist told me it was best for me if I wanted to restart playing basketball in September.
I walked a mile and a half on Friday, I was limping and it was painful but bearable. My foot doesn't bother me too much when I walk except if there is a hole or something. When I feel pain its in m'y ankle but i can feel that it's getting better every day. I am not close to start running or anything but I hope to be able to walk almost normally by the end of next week

It sounds like you are doing very well. Good job. Don't do too much at one time especially if it is painful and you are limping. Try walking 1/2 mile three times a day and increase the length until you start feeling pain and begin limping. Does the physical therapist have you do ankle exercises? Mine did because the ankle hurt more than the foot and needed to be strengthened after being immoble for so long. Good luck with basketball in September. My doc let me return to exercise classes based on my xrays and walking on my toes and hopping. Basketball would require much more like pivoting and being able to really jump higher and land hard on your injured foot, not just hopping on it. Best of luck and good dreams. Dev's Mom

Good Morning Shawney,
I hope I can help ease your distress. I broke my 5th metatarsal on February10.
I work as an educational assistant with a severely autistic five year old, so I I'm off work for the next 3 months. I have 3 sets of crutches, one set for each floor.
I am into week 2 now. Yesterday i made fudge, rolls, cinamon buns, dr. OZ Protien cookies, and Protein bars. I dont particularly like baking but it beats sitting round. I am
Also going to try to paint a picture. Check out angela anderson on youtube. Lol. Just a thought.
I'm a very active person also. I usually go to the gym 5 days a week I do yoga four to five times a week plus I run around
all day with my student. The mere thought of sitting all day long is not acceptable to me.
So I try to do my regular routine at home but just do it differently. I use my kitchen chair as a walker with my knee resting on it,
and push it around and also use a bag to load up all my ingredients to carry over to the counter to do any baking or cooking. I fill up a water bottle
And put it in a bag to carry , using my crutches travel around the main level to water my plants.
I have a 4 level split. I scootch down the stirs on my butt and up the stirs on my knees, holding the spindles on the stairs. I also drag my tablet and cell
Phone in a small bag when i go to sit on another part of the house. I elevate my leg on the bathroom counter and wash my hair in the sink and do my makeup etc.
Great for stretching. I con't to do excercises daily but mostly sitting stretches and o the floor work. Dumb bells and leg raises etc, ab work and on and on and on. You
may be laughing but you would be surprised at how people believe that a broken foot is the beall end all.
People can do amazing things with a less mobility than us. Just be mindful. If there is a will there is a way. My husband of 38 years is having a harder time adjusting than me. Lololo
Lolololol. Hope this helps and

Great attitude Cricket. I also tried to keep active while I was recovering from a Jones fracture last February. It was hard on me to be limited (I hated not driving) and harder on my husband of 47 years because he had to start doing more chores. I found exercises on youtube that could be done while non weight bearing. Sorry I don't remember the particular site but it sounds like you have it covered already. I was used to going to exercise classes 4 times a week and needed that instructor telling me what to do and how many! You seem self motivated which is enviable. I'm back to classes and doing just fine. You will too.

i fell yesterday morning, fracturing my 5th metatarsal non-displaced. went to the clinic & they ordered x-rays, then sent me home saying they'd give me a call when they reviewed the film. that was about 9 am . all day long i called the clinic every couple hours to be told it would be a few minutes. meanwhile the pain just kept increasing. the last time i called, i got the nurse advisor who told me the place was closed. she advised me to go to the ER. i did. they were able to access the x rays & put my foot in a boot. they also gave me pain pills. i still hurt, but at a 7 instead of a 10. they gave me a list of the docs who can help me on Monday. i just have to be patient.
