5th Metatarsal Fracture Recovery

Hello. I have a number of questions.

8 weeks ago I broke my 5th metatarsal after falling. I just got out of my cast yesterday and was out in an air cast/boot. And the doctor left me with a number of questions unanswered and my next appointment isn't for 4 weeks with no physio or such before hand.

1. Today I have been able to start walking, worst I have been is using one crutch, mostly able to walk with no crutches, is this ok after only a day? I don't want to go on doing myself damage. The doctor told me that for my next appointment there is a chance that if I feel able I could come in my own normal footwear, but he never said anything for until then.

2. When showering, afterwards, am I able to weight bear for a step or two without the boot on to sit down again to dress etc. I'm unsure on this

3. What exercises are good to strengthen my calf muscles and also to gain back full range of motion in my ankle, I know one or two from sports injuries, but i haven't been told anything of this nature for this specific injury.

Any help would be very highly appreciated, as I just don't want to damage my foot further and either permenently injure myself or hinder the healing process

As aside information, I'm 19, a little overweight but in relatively good shape.

I have a communiated spiral fracture of the fifth met that happened on 25 May 2016, i was placed in a walking boot but not permitted to weight bare. The orthos continue to tell me that it will only take 6 weeks to heal, and that there is some healing, as you can see by my Xray (Taken at 3 weeks post fracture) I did a good job. Has anyone experienced weird sharp burning type pains, my husband tells me it is most probably the bones being pulled back together, I have no pain if I press the site of the fracture, its a little weird and I also have pain on the ball of my foot.  No swelling but bruising is still evident.

I dont go back to the Orthos until next Friday which is at the 5 week mark, very concerned as we have an overseas holiday planned for Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand for the end of august and dont know to cancel or not?

Anyone have anything on wearing a moonboot travelling??? Thinking this might be what will happen.

Yes, I have weird pains. The ball of my foot has an odd sensation too. Doctor tells me it is caused from the boot pressing on my ankle, nerves, etc. I am on week 10 - with 4 more weeks to next check up. As soon as I can purchase an ankle brace, I can move from boot to brace.

I am 67, a horse back rider and active in tons of other ways. I have a stress 5th metatarsal (Jones) fracture as well. I have not had surgery but, am in boot I can take off and on crutches. My ortho doc tells me 5 weeks on crutches then another 6 to 8 in this awful boot that I can weight bear in. I have been cheating and heel touching a bit. I do stand in the shower mostly on not injured toot. I do understand how difficult these fractures are to heal because of low blood supply. Has everyone on this site had surgery? My doctor thought mine would heal because it was not displaces. ugh. help

      Sandy ,

I had an avuision fracture .I start week 7 tomorrow I did not wb for 3 weeks boot could come off at night only to sleep .After week 3 I could wb with crutches and on week 4 down to 1 crutch only Week 6 I could walk with no crutches dr said I could wear shoes in house only I have not done that yet .I will try that on week 7 confused I am a bit scared to try .I have not had much pain since the beginning little swelling but at time I do feel a little lite pain at fracture area then it goes away it's a come a go kind of thing . I will keep the boot on outside for about another 3 weeks then I will ditch the boot if all goes well. I had healing at week 2 and had ex ray at week 5 with more healing so I guess I hope to be ok I am 65 and a walker every day I miss it .I wish you well and hope for a great recovery for you .

My 10 yr old daughter rolled her foot, had pain, walked it off.. went to camp, lived life with occasional complaints of pain. It takes time to heal a sprain right? Well, it seemed to be getting worse instead of better after almost 3 weeks so we had an exray done. She has a 5th meta. fracture. They have her in a walking shoe and crutches. They will reevaluate after 6 weeks. She can take it off to sleep and they told her she can swim as long as she does not put pressure on it.

I am leery because she is very active. I am hoping for the best after 6 weeks.
