5th Metatarsal Fracture Recovery

Hello. I have a number of questions.

8 weeks ago I broke my 5th metatarsal after falling. I just got out of my cast yesterday and was out in an air cast/boot. And the doctor left me with a number of questions unanswered and my next appointment isn't for 4 weeks with no physio or such before hand.

1. Today I have been able to start walking, worst I have been is using one crutch, mostly able to walk with no crutches, is this ok after only a day? I don't want to go on doing myself damage. The doctor told me that for my next appointment there is a chance that if I feel able I could come in my own normal footwear, but he never said anything for until then.

2. When showering, afterwards, am I able to weight bear for a step or two without the boot on to sit down again to dress etc. I'm unsure on this

3. What exercises are good to strengthen my calf muscles and also to gain back full range of motion in my ankle, I know one or two from sports injuries, but i haven't been told anything of this nature for this specific injury.

Any help would be very highly appreciated, as I just don't want to damage my foot further and either permenently injure myself or hinder the healing process

As aside information, I'm 19, a little overweight but in relatively good shape.

    Hello all,

I fractured my 5th metatarsal (Jones Fracture) about 2 weeks ago while playing basketball. The fracture is non-displaced. I've been in a hard cast for this 2 weeks and have been on crutches. I've been elevating my foot every night and trying to stay off of it as much as I can. I've also been taking calcium citrate w/ vitamin D and other multivitamins to help recovery.

I've mostly read articles that say these fractures take months to show any healing or lessening of pain. However, I hardly feel any pain at all anymore. I've been wiggling my feet/toes around a lot in my hard cast and haven't felt pain. I occasionally feel soreness with movement, but not anything like it was at first. Could it be possible that my bone is healing fast or does the pain fade after a little while? I don't want to rush but the pain is pretty much gone besides soreness. My doctor said 6-8 weeks at first but I find it strange that I'm not feeling pain anymore.

I am 20 years old on summer break from college. I'm an athlete and I'm also unable to work so this has been a very long and frustrating 2 weeks. I've still been able to work out my upper body but not much else. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated!

The pain fades but the fracture remains. Do yourself a favor stay off of it. Walking or putting weight on your foot can cause the fracture to become displaced and cause a non Union. I know it sucks but if your active like me you should heal quickly and back on your feet in 6-8 weeks.

Doc just told me that too many people think it feels better and make the mistake of not following instructions.  Be patient = No regrets!  I took Cal/Mag D, C, Cod liver oil smile and Chiropractor recommended Collagen and lots of protein.

Mine moved, even though I didn't put any weight on it, it just drifted further apart so I ended up having a screw put in it, which put me back to the beginning. Mine is taking a very long time to heal due to the poor blood supply in that area and not helped because I broke my ankle at the same time, and I've been doing what I'm told. I'm week 19, walking with 1 crutch and trying to limp round the house without any and religiously following the physiotherapists instructions.

Oh Susan, that sounds like a nightmare!  I was really afraid of that. I am grateful that I am on track.  Did you get a knee scooter?  I got mine from Walmart online and it saved me.  Get a basket, it makes it so much easier to get even little things done.

I agree with her scooter with a basket. I had one too and because of that, I was able to follow non weight bearing mandate.

Pat, by the time I eventually found one over here, I was just days away from progressing to the boot. I'm now trying to balance butting all my weight on the leg which the Dr wants, and still using a crutch because the physio doesn't want me to "learn" to walk with a limp, apparently it's very hard to unlearn.

I was very disappointed when I saw the new x-rays last week the metatarsal hasn't changed in 12 weeks and whilst you can see some healing in the ankle, you can still see the fracture, Dr said there's union but no bone growth.

Mine is only JUST starting to heal , 6 months after the break.  I too have been very frustrated and upset as I am a fit person who likes to run and go to the gym, but couldn't do so.  I rested mine for ;6 weeks, total non weight bearing, foot above heart height etc.  However, unfortunatley for me it didn't work and no healing showed.  I was actually at my pre op in April (they were going to pin and plate) when the consultatnt decided to x ray again..and unbeleiveabley blurring showed in the break, which means it is starting, fingers crossed to heal.  Have had another x ray since, still healing, and one due in 10 weeks to check again.  So don't get too down hearted, although you could be lucky and it heals quickly.  Whatever happens, as long as it heals, by itself or with help, that is the main ting. I still get frurstrated as I can't run, and don't think I will be able to until the October at least....it will have taken nearly a year, but the main thing is that it heals in the end.

Hi, sorry to read that your's is slow to heal, hope things inprove soon.

Apparently foot bones have a poor blood supply, this is why they can take a while to heal. I was told that it is better to have light exercise like gentle walking with crutches rather than sitting with feet up. This helps with circulation down there and improves healing.

TO WALK OR NOT WHEN YOU HAVE PAIN?

I am in the US where treatment methods seem somewhat different. I broke my 5th Metatarsal 5 weeks ago in an undisplaced Jones fracture. I recieved an Una Cast, which is a soft cast, looks like just bandages, but provide more stability. I stayed in it for 4 weeks, all None Weight Bearing. I had no pain whatsoever. At the end of the  4th week, my doctor change my soft cast to simple bandages and a hard sole shoe and told me to start putting weight on, 50% for two days with a walker and full weight on afterwards. After 4 days I started to feel pain while walking. I did not expect pain. I knew that putting weight on brings faster healing, but I did not know if the pain is an indication that I might cause damage.

I saw my doctor today and he told me that I cannot cause damage at this stage by walking. He reiterated that putting weight on promotes healing. He advised to go back to 50% weight on and monitor it with pain. Do less if there is pain, do more if not.

He also started treatment with Electric Muscle Stimulation, which might promotes healing of the bone.

My Dr and the physio have been arguing, Dr wants me to walk full weight, physio's say when I do that I walk with a limp, and it's hard to unlearn walking with a limp. I don't go back to see the Dr for three months, physio says I'll be walking without crutches by then. I tend to go with the physio, each week I've got so much better, she gives me new exercises and I work hard at them, though I must admit it does hurt, she says aching is expected sharp pains mean don't do any more for now.

Hi shosh1 - sounds like i suffered a similar injury. Broken 5th, undisplaced. I was also given a similar prognosis and recovery advice. Happy to report that almost 15 weeks since my injury I'm walking (no limp now), running and cycling again. Not yet at the same speed and intensity as before, but my doctor says to be guided by pain. Anyway, foot is sore occasionally if i overdo it. If that happens i'll generally ease back off for a day or so. I'm lucky that i have a desk-job so foot does get rested. Best wishes, and hang on in there! smile

I was in NWB boot for 16 weeks and knee scooter for 5th met. fracture. Also used bone stimulator. Have been walking in shoes 3 weeks. Was feeling better, but now nerve pain on 1/3 of foot from toe to heel along 5th met and up ankle and on up leg tendon. Some swelling. So afraid of reinjury. Called podiatrist but she isn't concerned. Just don't know what kind of discomfort to expect. Can any one help? Thanks.
