5th Metatarsal Fracture - WEEK 7, pain on OTHER side of foot!?

I fractured my 5th met 7 weeks ago. I was NWB for 4 weeks, then the 5th week I was able to walk in the moonboot. Week 6 I was given the all clear to transition into a supportive shoe (runner etc).

I'm dealing with  A LOT of pain when walking. The fracture side is FINE, very minimal but my arch/big toe is agony every step that I take. It's JUST bearable to walk but I have to grit my teeth. Can anyone relate? My doctor told me to rub it with a golf ball, but it doesn't seem to help. I went to a physio and she also didn't seem too concerned. I've been walking for over a week now and the pain hasn't improved.  I'm thinking it could be Plantar Fasciitis, however the pain is more so when I motion my arch and my big toe and it's constant, not necessarily worse in the morning/or after rest. It could also just be my muscles, I mean they weren't in action for 5-6 weeks.. however, I just think my pain is really intense and without improvement.

Has ANYONE dealt with this as well? am I just being stupid?

I'm having the same problem - fractured middle three metatarsals just under 8 weeks ago, was given the all-clear to walk without the boot a few days ago but my foot is sore to walk on pretty much everywhere except where I broke it! I think it's probably a matter of the joints just getting used to having pressure on them again but I'm going to ring up the fracture clinic and ask for a second opinion if it's no better in a week or two.

I’m coming to the conclusion that’s it’s all normal - I have to, to keep sane lol! The only reason I’m so concerned is I’m flying to the UK from Australia TOMORROW for 5 weeks! LOT’S OF WALKING and right now I’m walking at about 40%.

My doctor didn’t refer me to physio at all and didn’t seem concerned about the pain. I don’t have private health so I paid for the physio out of pocket and she gave me exercises and advice.

What pain are you dealing with? The only way I can’t describe mine is the motion of the big toe and arch when it rolls forward if that makes sense..? So almost the ligament/joint/muscle feels like it’s being pulled back like a rubber band then on release the pain comes.

That sounds quite similar to the pain I'm having - I can stand comfortably with my foot flat on the floor but it hurts when I try to stand on tip-toes or the balls of my feet, and when I try to 'roll forward' in a normal heel-toe walking motion. It feels like the pain is mostly in the joints, sort of little sharp aches, but it's quite hard to pinpoint. The weird thing is that it hurts most in the joints along my first and fifth metatarsals, neither of which I broke! The first metatarsal in particular was really sore last night to the point it swelled up and started aching even when I didn't move it - I'm worried I might have done some damage! I think I'm going to ring up the hospital and see if they think I need to go back and have it re-examined.

    Hi Hayley,

I cannot speak directly to your  case but keep in mind that your muscles may be a  little weak after y ou were off your feet for a  while so  maybe it is your  foot readapting  to the new amounts of stress and strain you are putting on it. I think  it is a good sign that the physio and the doctor  are n ot particularly concerned about it--maybe they  have seen i t before  and they are just thinking  it will pass with time.  I  certainly hope  that to be the  case. Best wishes to you.

Replying to this again a couple of days later because I found a solution that's helped me a little bit - what sort of footwear are you trying to walk in? I think part of the reason I was in such excruciating pain at first was because I was wearing trainers that were a) too tight around the forefoot area, and b) didn't have enough arch support. I've since switched to a pair of old Dr Marten boots with arch support pads stuck in them and they feel much better - I'm still limping due to muscle weakness and my foot still feels a bit sore and uncomfortable, but nowhere near as bad as before! It might just be that you need to try a few things and see what's most comfortable for you.
