5th Metatarsal mid shaft fracture advise/thoughts

l managed to fracture my 5th metatarsal by going over on platform shoes.....I went to A&E where an X-ray showed a displaced but together fracture. Foot is not out of shape. So that was 5days ago. I was given a shoe to wear which is useless so have been wearing an air cast boot. I wasn't,t given crutches or any advice really. I have appointment with the fracture clinic next Monday. The thing is apart from being bruised and mildly swollen the pain now is very minimal. I haven,t taken any pain killers as I haven't needed them. I have been putting weight though the foot as to be fair it really is not that sore. I am off work and am resting boringly .

Stress fractures I had 3years ago 3rd metatarsal were agony.....

does anyone have any advice or previous experience with this type of acute fracture?

Hello, sounds very similar to my story - dancers fracture from falling over on platform shoes. I have a minimally displaced fracture. My doctor gave me a cam boot and said to immobilize it for 5 weeks - until I see him, so I am using an iwalk hands free crutch and a scooter. He prescribed a bone stimulator, said to take Vitamin D. He was concerned that any weight bearing could cause a secondary injury.

It will be interesting how this will be handled Monday at the fracture clinic.  I also went to the ER when I fell and broke my 5th metatarsal (a Jones fracture-not mid shaft).  The ER put me into a aircast boot ankle height and an appointment to see on orthopedic specialist in a week.  I thought I was doing great.  I was bruised but after a few days in the boot I had little pain.  I could sleep without the boot and even walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night without the boot and without pain and no meds. I thought after seeing the orthopedic I would be able drive without the boot on my right foot.  Well I was shocked.  I hope this does not happen to you with a mid shaft fracture but I was put into a full non weight bearing cast from my toes to my knee and got around on a knee scooter for 4 weeks, then I went into an air cast boot up to my knee 24/7 for another 4 weeks.  I was told that a Jones fracture is hard to heal because of a limited blood supply and I was 69 y/o. No platform shoes for me.  Haha.  I hope all goes well for you Monday.  You have my best wishes that you are not shocked like I was.
