5wks post TKR bend

ive just come home from knee club at physio dept and hoped for at least 90 deg bend but only got 85. I feel so very frustrated as there were older folks than me who had a better bend, I'm doing my exercises and am moving around a lot, but the back of my knee is still quite swollen and seems to be impeding my bend. I'm icing and elevating 3 times a day, should I be doing more? It all just makes me feel so low and disappointed in myself, I feel like I'm letting myself down somehow

Pleae don't let it get you down!  As you say, it's still swollen . .that will impede the bend.  I had around 85 at six weeks. . and the specialist said fine, keep up the work, and signed me off.  I did keep up the exercises. . now around 120 . . not brilliant, but good enough for me.  I found the bend increased about 5 degrees when the swelling went down, and i did push it two or three times a day while watching tv etc. . I expect I could have reached a better bend if I had been prepared to suffer more, but I'm a bit of a coward really, and 120 does everything I want!  Good heavens, you are only FIVE WEEKS!!!!  don't be so hard on yourself!

Will do Chris...I'll race you to 92 degrees ...just kidding! I am still using a walker as I have stability issues with the quad but it seems to be getting stronger and if I wasn't also chicken just now might try some caning around the house. My pt has me applying heat, then ice so am doing that as he says the combo incre ases blood supply to the muscles. Also have started to take some pain meds before physio so that I can push the knee a bit. I have seen lucký that I have not had any pain since week2 even at night...so was thinking I didn't need it anymore..now that the thaw has set in there is more pain after exercising for sure. I love this forum as everyone is so positive and encouraging.

Ha ha, can just imagine trying to race!!!!  I'm using crutches outside and a stick inside as my other knee is to be done next, and I have problems with my back and fibromyalgia, but hey ho we will recover from this in time I'm sure

    Don't give up.

Not sure what exercises you are doing at knee club but I found this one really helpful.

    Sit on the bed.

Have a tea tray at your feet and keep your socks on.

Start moving your leg up towards you, bending your knee.

When you feel you cannot go any further just gently give it a little push a bit further.

Mark on the tray how far you get

Hopefully next time you will get a bit further.

    Hope this helps.

Take care and keep in touch

    Love Sarah xx
