I started PT the 2 days after I came home, walking is great, walk around your house and if sore just relax.  Lay down and do butt crunches and ankle pumps.  The butt crunches helped me slit.  Also while you lay down, press the back of your knees to the bed, that helps your thighs

Thanks Laurie , I have been doing all the exercises given by the hospital , just wondered when you first ventured outside for how long and far ?

I didn’t walk outside for a few weeks.  It was hard at first.  I’m about 13 weeks post op now and it’s getting better every day.  Just do as much as your body will let you do.  No reason to over do it.  I’m just working on my flexibility more than anything now.

At 2 weeks I walked outside, only one day it was warm and all snow melted.  I am asked from corner to corner of my block.  At 3 weeks I started driving - only taking Tylenol for discomfort

    Dear Mary

I thought that it was normal to be encouraged to start weight bearing walking on a new hip the day of the surgery or the next day.

Just walk as far as you comfortably can each day and use two crutches until such time you can walk strongly without any limp and with a good gait.

You need to do the muscle strengthening exercises for at least the first month and certainly until you can toss the crutches.

    Good luck, Richard

Here in Spain they keep us in the hospital from 4 days to a week so, there was very little putter time at home.  I started walking outside immediately and no, post 6 weeks, I continue to walk up to a couple of miles.  Yesterday I was given permission to bike and swim some as well.  I was never prescribed PT but am doing extremely well without it.  I walk with one cane, just for security now.

Hi, I think just do what feels ok for you. I came out on day 2, and went out walking with my crutches from day 3. (It was warm and sunny though, July.) Just take it steadily, all the best, Judith
