6 months post PKR swollen ankle

Hi all,

5 1/2 months PKR and I've been doing some gardening, mostly sitting on a tall upturned bucket - knee is a bit painful on the outside (PKR was inside) and my ankle has swollen. Is this to be expected? Should I be worried? My recovery has been so good I don't want to upset the apple cart but I'm trying to get back to doing normal activity. Also noticing that some of the discomfort at the back of my knee has returned. The knee is still swollen compared to my other knee not sure if this is fluid retention.

Hi Gorillagirl. I'm 4 months down the line from TKR and appear to be doing ok....back to work (mostly sitting), general housework and shopping, and have been feeling good about it all, but the last 2 weeks I've had swollen ankle and foot on the TKR side. Don't know if this is cos I'm overdoing it, standing too much, but I'm now getting worried and thinking of seeing the doc soon. Sometimes thinking 2 steps forward and 1 step back! 😕

Hi lynn41926, You are doing so well! I can't imagine being able to go back to work (took early retirement at 63 due to multiple ailments). The swelling I experienced subsided after some rest days - it was also very hot weather. If you are worried it can't hurt to ring the surgery. I'm now getting out of breath a lot but not sure if it's just general unfitness and weight gain. Will up the walking as that seems to suit the new knee. Yes 2 steps forward and 3 back at times! I get very frustrated - tried kneeling today because I need to finish decorating the bathroom (been on hold as I didn't get it finished before surgery - mainly because I was paranoid about cutting myself!). Won't be kneeling again in a hurry! It was very uncomfortable and pain that I hadn't had before - I suppose it means that the numbness is beginning to go.

Let me know how you are feeling. Hope it's positive GG
