6 mths post THR and still pain in IT Band and Greater Trochanteric Pain

Posted , 8 users are following.

Help ! I'm continuing to have pain along the IT Band area and also in the Bursa at the top of the Hip. That pain is when I sit and the pain in the IT Band area is like a soreness and stiffness. I've had 2 cortisone injections in different areas but no better. I think I'll need a MRI scan.

Anyone experienced anything like this. It's really getting me down as I used to be so active. I'm 55

Thanks

I'm 7 weeks post op and I'm having the same problem. Due to see my consultant tomorrow so I'm hoping he can come up with something to relive this. Also experiencing knee pain and stiffness.

      Hi Julie -Ann.

I am nearly 8 weeks and seeing surgeon and PT tomorrow. From about 5 weeks I have had terrible groin pain. Very achy and stiff all around my hip and back area.

However last couple of days the groin pain. Although still there is not half as bad.

I think the back pain and aches are all part and parcel of the healing. Everyone I have spoken to who has had THR says it takes so much longer to fully recover than we are led to believe.

Hopefully will have more to report after tomorrow.

It does get better. Some people take longer than others. X

      Hi Sandra

I agree people I've spoken to that have had a THR either have similar symptoms or something different. I don't think it's a quick recovery. I was just concerned that I may have torn my iliopsoas ligament as I had problems getting in my daughters car plus getting into bed and pulled my groin, was so painful. I'll find out tomorrow and hopefully stop worrying x

Hi, I'm 16 weeks and still have psoas tendinitis which feels like groin pain and is most notable when lifting my knee up. So steps, and other types of leg lifts really irritate it. I had the anterior approach done and it is not uncommon for it to happen. Problem is that it's a slow healer and quite easy to exacerbate. I do all of my other exercises and try very hard to baby that area. I have a fairly strenuous job and have been back at work since 6 weeks. It's very stressful having to pay attention to not over using the psoas since it's such a huge tendon right in the middle of the quad. But I'm just moving on and hoping for the best. I still ice it as needed. Not sure if that helps but good luck with yours.

      Hi

I iced mine Sunday and it seemed to help. It also hurts me if when I'm standing I lift my knee, although at this stage I can't lift it very high. If I'm laying in bed and raise my knees so my feet are flat on the mattress I don't have pain in the groin at

all. Hopefully I've just pulled muscle a bit from being a bit over eager and it will sort itself out.

I'm a little over 3 months out from hip revision of my right hip. I too have bursitis and tendonitis. Someone on this forum mentioned icing and I've been doing that and it seems to be helping not to mention a deep tissue massaging and pressure on those tendons to release them from your therapist will help too. The good thing is it's fixable keep up with your exercises, icing and massaging. I was so tight and couldn't bend my knee but I'm doing better. Im still tight and the joint is still stiff but it's getting better. I was 1&1/2 inches short prior to surgery I'm now the same length but for a very small amount so the muscles were short now with the length it's pulling the muscles & tendons hence the tendonitis and bursitis. Not to mention being non weight bearing for 6 weeks after my revision didn't help the situation but I'm doing better!! Give it time!! Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery!!

      Hi Linda

That may also account for why my knee is so tight, just feels like I have a small cushion behind it preventing me from bending it. I haven't had physio yet, the consultant said he would discuss this when I see him tomorrow so hopefully that will sort a lot of my problems out

Oh yea I was the same way!! I could barely bend my knee now I can bend pretty good BUT still needs work. It's tight. At it I Force bend at 106 degrees!! But at home I'm about 60? 😆 I use a towel to help bend it more as much as tolerated. Sometimes I'm scared 😳 I'm gonna break something!!

Oh and I feel the pain and tenderness when I sit on the side of thigh jest below the buttock. If I could get over that life would be great!! 🤓

Hopefully that will get better soon for you. I don't have that, my scar just feels a little tender, but then I suppose it's early days with that.

    Nick:

This may be knee issues. Prior to my THR, I had knee arthroscopy for a torn miniscus. As my orthopedic surgeon consulted, " to improve the outcome for the THR". Referred pain from the knee to the hip and vice versa. I almost went the route of getting injections into the band. A MRI did in fact confirm that the issue. was in my knee. It was a good decision in my case. I am 1 day post anterior THR and knee does not have any pain.

Nick you're not alone it's been one and a half years for my total hip replacement and I have got the worst groin pain mostly when I bend over to 90° and also pain and stiffness in my back! I have had just about every test out there done and today I just had a Myelogram on my back in order to hopefully come up with where the pain is coming from is it my hip or is it my back or maybe even a little of both I pray to find out an answer. I was very active and now cannot hardly do anything that includes distance walking or sitting, and when I do it causes days of extra pain in my leg and back. My life has changed and I'm very unhappy!! Hope someone on this forum gets an answer to this pain in groin!! Please share. Best to everyone.

Have you tried icing in that area? I was having groin pain too, tendonitis in that area and someone mentioned icing. I tried it and honestly I can say it's helping. Also pressure on those tendons in groin to release them is helpful. Maybe a physical therapist can help with that. Just some ideas to help with your pain. Praying for you and hope all gets better. Hugs, 🤗🤗. LD

Hi there. Yes I have tried icing it and spend most of the time at home with an ice pack on it. It does help but it's not practical to have an ice pack when I'm outside. I am due to have physio next week.

Linda no, I have not tried icing in that area. But icing does help my back when I overdo. I'm looking for a permanent solution. I cannot go on w this groin/leg/back issue forever unknown. It is so debilitating after some days that it's excruciating!! I'm just praying that the Myelogram shows something and that that something can be treated. I was hoping someone has had some positive outcome with this similar problem post thr. Thanks so much!!

The only thing I know from reading/research is that there is a surgery to release the tendon and that is quite effective. I don't know how that impacts the surrounding muscles and what else it entails but you can definitely research it online....buzz words: ileopsoas tendinitis, tendon release, psoas tendinitis solutions. Hope that helps.

Thank you!! My surgeon did mention that. I just want to know for certain that is the problem. I just feel that it is so painful to just be a tendinitis of the psoas. Has anyone on here know of another who has had this problem and had the surgery to fix it?? Thanks!!

Mine's not making me happy to tell you the truth....but I'm willing to wait it out because that kind of tendinitis can take up to 1 1/2 years to resolve itself. I'm just not willing to contemplate anything other than TIME to see what happens.

Sad to say mine has gotten worse. I had my surgery Sept. 2015. Causing pain to my back and knee now as well. Sometimes can even put pressure on that leg. So I'm ready to do something about it.

My physical therapist says icing is good. Someone mentioned ultra sound therapy. But my therapist said that is not good as it can loosen the hip joint because of the vibrations through sound wave. And also said itis means inflammation from either tendons (tendonitis) bursa (bursitis) so icing is good for that. Heat is more for soreness if muscles. It loosens like your joints where icing will stiffen the joint but takes care of inflammation. So much stuff to learn!! Like how all these muscles and tendons connect around the hip and run around the abdomen, back and thigh!! So something around groin affects thigh or upper abdomen!! I never knew!!! Our bodies are amazing!!

Thanks Linda. Icing does help but I'm looking for some answers and more permanent relief. I'm hoping that my Myelogram will show some answers of the Source if this awful pain!!
