6 week check up

6 week check up today (at 7 weeks). Not sure how I feel - new hip is great - no pain - but still in pain from other hip and still can' t walk that far because of it. Know it needs doing, and know I need to discuss it with the consultant. If I have it done and it feels like the other one dies now it would be fantastic - it's just the thought of going through the whole process again - and telling my employers I'm going to be off again. Didn't sleep well last night thinking about it - which means I turned over several times in the night - so hip really aching this morning. Can't keep fooling myself that everything's o.k - left getting the other one dine too long - could hardly walk, had no social life etc. Guess i' m not really asking advice - know the answer really - just wanted to put my feelings down somewhere they would be understood.

    Hi Shirley

    Good luck with your appointment.

You say it all- you know the answer and all I can say is life is too blimin short to be in pain when you don't need to be.

Go for it, think of how you'll be with 2 new hips in a years time. Backpacking? Marathon? The skies the limit!

Employers are just that, they will understand I hope. Put yourself first..,something none of us are good at.

    Good wishes

    Barbara xx

Hi, lucky for me not having any problems with my other hip, but if your other hip as painfull as your operated one was before your op, then Barbara is right and I'd say the same. Very awkward situation but at the end of the day you can only put up with a certain amount of pain which will make u make your decision for you. Best wishes to you.

    Hi Shirley,

im in the exact same situation. I'm almost 12wks post op and my left thr is doing well. I still have muscle pains and a few problems walking but that's due to the severity of my pain pre op (unable to move, walk just like you). No more bad hip!

My right hip is really causing me problems now, I knew both were bone on bone but the left had zero cartilage whereas the right had a little bit so Mr Left was done first.

My doctor wants to refer me now to get the right done, and I know I have to, but I too am worried about being off for another 12 was from work. My boss has been great, but I know how stretched they are without me. And my job can't be back filled as it involves a lot of security and permissions to do it.

i do hope you can decide what needs to be done....so I can't offer advice but just letting you know you're not alone 😃 x

Think Barbara has it right though - sometimes you just have to put yourself first. I also know that before my op I wasn't always as good at my job as I should be because of lack of sleep and pain medication. X

That was exactly my position. I couldn't function properly, therefore didn't really give as much as I should. My job is demanding and it's not until now that I realise how stressed I was even though I didn't show it.

I am taking this opportunity to reflect and think and actual put life into a bit more perspective. I'm 62 years old, hoping to be around for a bit longer yet.

Not sure if I have to have my other hip done! Hoping not but if I do will have to read my advice to you and apply to me!

Good luck. Let me know how you get on xx

    Hi Shirley, all,

For what its worth, im at five weeks po now and the only probs i have really stem from not having had hip sorted sooner( only cause i thought it was leg and back, but i was walking funny and didnt even realize) . The longer you lesbe things the worse for your recovery imho, smile so id be telling my employer there duty of care is to support me to get better thereby making me a more productive worker for years to comesmile hope you get sorted ok. Good to hear the new hip is great.  Don't leave it too long before you get the other one done if it is causing you pain, you really don't want to have put all your weight on the new hip to support the other one.  I am sure your employers would understand the problem.  Good luck.

Well had my appointment. All good with new hip.Consultant agrees other hip is ' shot' - bone on bone. Need to get referral from g p - but says he will put in discharge letter it needs to be done - up to me when I ask for referral. Going to leave it until the end of next month (3 months post op) then decide whether to ask now or wait till next year depending on how it feels.

Hi,  I knew going into this that both hips had to be replaced  as both are bone on bone.  I am now 4.5 weeks into the recovery and doing as well as can be expected I guess.  Still stiff and store as well as tired.  It is depressing to know that once the healing is complete on the right side, I have to go through it all again on the left.  Life is kind of on hold for who knows how long.  I am trying to keep a cheerful attitude but it is not easy.  I do not want to stress my family as they are so good to me.  So glad I found this site for support and am happy to support others as well

Hi Isabelle. Think I knew it too really - but lived in some sort of vague hope that having one done would be enough. I know what you mean about life being on hold - but think mine has been for the last year or so anyway with the pain. Really should have had this done sooner. At 7 weeks my new hip feels fantastic - and at least the second time around we will know what to expect. X
