6 week consultation & communication

Hi there Hip Hoppers( with appologies to Alan Freeman)

I'm due for my 6 weeks after consultation on Friday. Apart from telling me I can drive again -- hopefully-- what else can I expect on the day. eg do they x-ray, blood test, check movement. Help me out here as want to be prepared with the right questions.

Dont know if you all agree but I dont thing that we get enough detaied info post op. The "when can I legally drive" thing being one point in question. We are told that swimming is a good exercise but cant find anywhere saying dont do the breast stroke. No doubt there are lots of things you can all think of - let me know.

My surgeon said Defo not breast stroke ( re legs)

Your right, when is it ok to do this that n the other???

My surgeon says other than twist round or turn leg inwards/ outwards all else when you feel you can do something, try it. Lol

I was off all restrictions at 7 weeks except for bending leg sideways from knee down, was told nobody even with no replacement should do that. Otherwise, back to normal however, I still practice the golfer bend and pillow between knees, chiropractor said you should always have a pillow to keep in alignment while sleeping.

I drove after 6 weeks but I had the left hip done so I could use right for gas no problem. Getting in out was pretty easy too. I agree some hospitals offer a class I think they should all have to do that. I was told swimming is good I don't see why breast stroke would hurt but then again I am not a swimming guru. I am 13 weeks and will be purchasing a stationary bike since weather will be getting bad soon and I hate walking in the snowy cold. All I have had done at any follow-up is xray, I have my next one in 2 weeks I assume will be last for a year.

I am sure that like in many other areas it varies from place to place. At my check, I was asked to stand on the operated leg, test of strength. Then I was asked to lie on the couch across the other side of the room. It seemed to impress them that I got on the couch easily. The movement in the leg was then checked. No X-ray or blood tests, my HB had not gone below lower normal for a woman after op so I was not expecting any blood tests.

my list of questions were all answered, and included driving, when you can do an emergency stop, no need to tell insurance company or DVLA. Here I know others information is different, but I think we have had that discussion.

I also asked re returning to work, going on a cruise the following week and the best exercises to do to improve my gait. 90 degree rule lifted

I was also given the surgeon's secretary's number and told to ring for an appointment if any problems in the next 2 months

then discharged and told to use my new hip,

Have found out from DVLA that you have the consultants or your GPs agreement that u r fit to drive if u don't then your insurance is not valid.  .

Hi Colin, I drove after 7wks post op, I drove just round my area as its pretty quiet, I tried an emergency stop without any problem to my hip &have been driving most days as normal. My surgeon also said I could swim & do breast stroke contrary to what the physio,s told me. I find there,s so much conflicting information between the medical people so I put my faith in my surgeon I took his advise ,I am now 10wks post op and doing just fine, walking well, still exercising as my surgeon suggested so I say if you have any doubts ask your surgeon, good luck with your consultation.regards SUZIE.

Yes I have found there is so much conflicting info as well as a lack of detailed info surrounding hip ops.

You only have to look back on this site to confirm this.
