6 weeks after bunion/hammertoe surgery - foot quite swollen

So, yesterday I was 6 weeks after bunion and hammertoe surgery. My doctor said that I could walk in soft wide tennis shoes. Well, I tried with wide, large sneakers and then wide Lem shoes and my foot does not fit into anything. It is swollen and frozen. Also the skin on top of my foot and also sole, toes is very thick and hardened and now peels like crazy. I am limping along still in my neoprene surgical sandal. I know that it does not offer enough support but there is no shoe of any kind that I can put my foot into. My doctor said that I could drive when I can wear normal shoes. But I cannot wear even wide, soft sneakers. So, I am still elevating my foot a lot. It helps but not much. I know that swelling is normal and it will last quite a while. But I am worried that I cannot wear even wide soft athletic shoes. Have you experienced this? What did you do? I know there is light at the end of the tunnel but how long is this tunnel? Thank you!

its been 3 months since this post. How are you feet feeling now? I'm at 8 weeks and experienced alot of the same issues as you. My feet are able to fit in Nike Roshes as long as they are completely untied

I had my surgery on December 19, 2019. Ladipus bunionectomy and second toe was pinned and fused in the joint next to the nail. My doctor recommended physical therapy and it has helped a lot. I am still experiencing swelling and the more I talk to people with this surgery they say it can continue for 6 months to a year. I have gained back much feeling and quite a bit of motion. I have a ways to go though. I think I practically despairing at 6 weeks post surgery. Now I can see that it takes time and I am looking forward to the end result!
This site was a great spot to gather information and hear others experiences. It really helped me to hear others when it was time for the pin to be pulled. NO PAIN at all! Whew! I was very anxious about it.
God bless you all with healing completely and quickly!

My surgery was Oct 31, 2019. So almost 5 months now. My foot is generally back to normal, not swelling any more or rarely. The problem with the mobility of the toes remains though and still, I feel some unease when walking. The former hammer toe is unbendable and since the doc pinned it lower than the others, it strikes the ground in a funny, uneasy way. The big toe is a little bit mobile but not enough. And I know that these problems are here to stay. I have to make peace with it.

What therapy did you do for range of movement?

I am now 10 weeks out from surgery, and in some respects I believe I am progressing. I had my bunion done and second toe pinned for hammertoe . I am still having times (lots of them, sometimes for days at a time) when there is serious pain in what feels like it is it between the big and second toe. It does not feel like it has anything to do with the bunion, but rather the area of the hammer toe.
Have any of you had similar issues? I would love to hear that this is just part of the process and will eventually go away, but I am increasingly fearful that something may have been damaged in that area. X-rays at 6 weeks when the pin was removed were normal. It is not a shooting pain (had some of those earlier) but more of a feel that there is something sharp pushing between those two toes. Has anyone had that sensation?
I have not had physical therapy, so I have a call in to request a phone conference with a therapist since going in for non-emergency appointments now seems unwise because of the virus.
Also, my third toe (to which nothing was done) has raised up out of alignment. Doctor noticed that initially and told me to push it down, but doing that repeated for weeks has not made any difference.
Any advice or encouragement?

I just had my hammertoe (actually 2 toes) done yesterday. Surgery was easy, as was day 1. I'm just experiencing my first bit of discomfort and am planted in my chair with my foot elevated and iced. This is my 4th surgery on my foot all related to a 40+ year broken leg ski cast. Clearly, each surgery is different. The cast did endless damage to my foot. I'm in a surgical boot and have pins and using a cane and walker to aid in heal walking. This morning I felt like I was being stabbed on the bottom of my foot. All normal from what I'm told.
I'm so happy to have found this blog. Comforting to know that what I feel and will be feeling is all normal. Thanks for sharing!

I drove within 1.5 weeks. Just took my surgical shoe off and drove barefoot. Put the surgical shoe back on when i arrived wherever I was going. I was able to drive a LOT more comfortably once the stitches were out (2 weeks post op). PS: I found it's more comfortable to drive WITH the surgical shoe on, but the legality may vary by state. So, check our state driver laws. If you're not allowed to, drive barefoot OR take your cloth wraps off and slide into very wide sandals (like Birkenstocks) to drive in.

6 weeks out from bunion correction and hammertoe repair on my left foot. i wish i would have found this site so much sooner - the swelling, numbness and tingling were so much more than i expected and i suffered much with minimal sleep. 2-3 hours was the best i could do in bed before returning to the recliner, and i iced it every 2 hours or so. And no one understands unless they've been through it. i had hoped to have a simple bunion correction on my right foot before the end of the year, but i won't even consider that now. Being non-weight bearing, and totally isolated for 6 weeks has been as bad emotionally as physically. i thought with my rolling cart, i would be able to be up and out, but that wasn't the case. i tried a couple of times for church, lunch out, etcetera and paid for it dearly with increased swelling and was always completely down the following day, so i gave up.
The pin came out yesterday and it wasn't bad at all; the toe ached a bit yesterday, but better today.
i am now in a surgical shoe for 3 more weeks and can drive and walk as tolerated, which honestly, isn't much. i CAN walk, but the swelling/tingling is bad, and my ankle hurts the worst: maybe because my foot has just dangled for weeks now?
i am going to start floor exercises because i HAVE to move; i cant stand my chair any more.
i am supposed to travel by car to go visit my daughter this weekend which is a 15 hour (2 day trip). The doctor says its fine as long as i can elevate and ice, but i am scared. Just driving or riding around doing errands, i haven't been able to go much longer than about 3 hours without being miserable.
Any advice?

Hi there, I wanted to see how you're recovery is progressing. I am just over 3 weeks from similar surgery. Had both feet done at the same time - both bunions, hammertoes (2 on each foot), and both tailor's bunions. It was a lot of work. I had minimally invasive surgery, so no large cuts, no plates or pins but post-op healing is still painful. I am in surgical shoes and can hobble on heels to and from bathroom, take a few minutes in the shower with the leg coverings (but it's an ordeal). Standing more than 3-4 minutes is impossible without feeling numbness, especially in the areas under the toes. Elevation and ice gel packs have helped. Not to mention the frustration of being immobile when I'm accustomed to a very active lifestyle. Hoping things improve with time. It was good to hear your experience. I hope things are going well for you.
