6 weeks and 3 days post thr

Today I went for my first follow up appointment and I thought I would share my experience so far. I must admit, for the first 8 days, I thought I'd made a mistake as it was rough ! I had no idea how hard it would be with my first experience of being in hospital, the trauma of the aneathatist trying to get the cannula in my hand (which took 6 attempts), the pain of the injection in my spine (which I was told shouldnt be painful), the sickness and diarrhoea from all the drugs administered and the amount of help I underestimated needing once I got home. However, after the first 8 days I started to feel the benefits and whilst I still questioned whether I would ever have the nerve to go through it all again with my second hip replacement (date to be determined),I persevered and tried to remain positive. With the help of this group and sheer determination, after 4 weeks and 4 days I once again (literally over night), felt a significant improvement and I am glad to say that I am now completely mobile, pain free and have absolutely no regrets. I don't think anyone can quite prepare you for the mental and physical challenge of this surgery, but after 6 weeks and 3 days, I can honestly say that I am now looking forward to continuing with my rehabilitation, regaining strength and flexibility in my new hip aswell as setting the date for my other hip replacement later in the year. Thank you everyone who responded to my questions and concerns on my journey.

    Hi,

My LTHR went a bit smoother than yours, I had the operation at about midday Tuesday and by midday Wednesday with the aid of a cane, I walked 3x 2 rotations of the hospitals internal circular 100 metre corridor with a 30 minute break between each session of 2 rotations.

Yes I did over do it and had to throttle back for a day or 2 due to dis-comfort but I had a goal that I wanted to be playing golf in the 6th week, it finished up being 6 weeks 1 day, first round in a cart and have walked ever since.

After getting home on the 4th day with aid of cane because nursing staff were watching me 😉 , I ditched the cane and haven't used it or walking frame since.

The most dis-comfort I felt was sleeping on my back, I hated it, sliding off the sofa and trying to sit down going to the toilet, I was using an elevated toilet seat but it was so uncomfortable.

What I did and thoroughly recommend others to do, is place a sleeping bag still zipped up along the sofa, it made the sofa much more comfortable and because of the shiny/slippery outer material, made it easier to rotate and slide off the sofa. You could also place the rolled out sleeping bag on your bed etc.

BTW, I also built up the sofa about 100mm by placing timber square 100mm posts under the legs, the timber post was laying on the ground from front to back of sofa. I enjoyed the sofas extra height so much it's still there. 😃

    Cheerz 😄 😃 😉

What a great idea to use a slippery sleeping bag ! I have one too and didn't think about using it. I will definitely give that a go next time ; )

      HI,

Best of luck, no, I just mean that it all goes as well as it did for me.

What I've found to be a strange feeling is the extra length in my left leg, prior to my TLHR it was 5mm shorter due to cartilage wear down, now it's about 5mm longer to allow for any settling.

Before I had a subtle limp on my left side due to the pain, now my golfing buddies say I have a slight limp on m right side, I don't feel it but I know there is a length difference because if I walk with a shoe on my right foot and bare left feet, it feels like I'm walking on level ground. HaHaHa

      Cheerz 😃 😄 😉

Reading your post made me feel so happy for you now you are really on the mend. I didnt have a full hip replacement but as i fell and broke my hip i had rod and screws. Im nearly 7 weeks post op and i was already disabled before so recovery has been very hard. This past week i have felt things slightly improving so i am happy about that. I wasnt booked to see my consultant for a check up but as i was getting a lot of groin pain i panicked and now thankfully he is seeing me next Tuesday to check everything and x-ray my hip so at least i will no if everything is healing properly. I agree with you we never realise what these operations involve and how it affects us both mentally and physically. I hope i never have to go through this again as apart from trying to deal with my recovery im also dealing with my Son who has just been diagnosed with Cancer so my heads all over the place. When i read your post it just made me feel that things will get better so i thank you for sharing as i was in a dark place tonight. Wishing you all the best.

Oh Mandy, I am so sorry to hear that you have had a rough time and to get news about your Son now must be awful. I am glad I have helped in a small way and wish you and you family well on your journey to recovery.

Glad you are doing so well. I too have the worst veins. I did both hips in 2019 10 mos apart.

The aneathatist told me I had lovely veins before she started so I'm not sure why she struggled so much : 0

How was your recovery and how are you doing now ?

Hi. Its been a year since I fell and broke the neck of my femur. I had 3 pins inserted, but I was told it wasnt until they had a better look during my op if I was going to have a hip replacement. Looking back the thing I remember the most is the depression I fell into, not being able to get out of the house for at least three weeks. The only company I had were the two home carers who came twice a week. Anyway that feeling was short lived thank heavens. I had my last check up and xray last week and was told my thigh had healed well and I didnt need to have a hip replacement, as it was still a 50/50 chance if it hadnt of knitted as good as it had!!!!!!

I was hit by a car, result: 17 broken bones- 3 in my right hand and wrist, right shoulder, cervical spine nicked, resulting in nerve damage and permanent disability of my left arm+ hand (thank god i'm right handed...)left collarbone, left arm in 2 places, 6 ribs and my right hip, internal bleeding thus loss of spleen - 3 years onwards i'm waiting for a thr as the bone is necrotic and collapsing, and basically addicted to opiod painkillers, my thr will be anterior and fwb, so recovery should be relatively short, and i can't wait.....
