Hi James
I also felt very anxious in the first month of taking Citalopram I understand, from what I have read, that this is a common sude-effect of this drug. My anxiety levels have subsided a bit after 6 weeks.
Apparently, there are other anti-depressants that deal more effectively with anxiety. It might be worth seeing your doctor again.

Hi Jill
many thanks for the reply. Would you say try and go abit longer? i hear alot of people saying they have felt awfull and like their life was coming to an end... and pushed through and it was well worth it. Well if i could know i would then obviously stick with it as long as i can. Just cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel yet... 😤
kind regards x

Hi James /the citrolopram can take at least another 6/8 weeks or even more to have the ssri build up in your system,so try to persevere a bit more and from my experiences it does work.

Hi Marsh thankyou for the reply.
its weird because before i was on the medication my anxiety was there and ruining my day but i could go and do it if that makes sense?.. Now i feel scared and its like my whole brain has been switched and i do not feel 'right' would love to go back to work but am no where near ready.. i just cant see how anyone can push through longer in this weird anxiety feeling period. It really scares me at times and i feel like i am going to keel over. I also feel very detached at times like whats going on is not real? im hoping it is the medication causing this and i am not on my way to a loosing the plot! all the best James

Hey James,
just a thought maybe go back to work limited duty if you can. I felt my job got me consumed and It helped me. Don't give up it takes a good 3-4 months and you'll have good times which you stated in your posts. It's a slow process. Cut out caffeine and cut back on sugar. Force yourself to walk. I use my headphones and just clear my mind with my favorite music. I also went out utube and started meditation. I'm at 10mg which I learned from this blog that going up in dosage doesn't necessarily mean it will help. Just remember if you do change dosage do it slow and easy. I was fully back to normal 9 months. I started celexa 1/24/18. Keep us posted of how you are doing.

Hi Will.
yes could be an option mate yes. ots the heightend anxiety i have its so scary worst than ever! did you feel this at all? and ive heard people say it takes a long time but the increased anxiety feels like a different level.. as bad as it is to admit it i feel somtimes that im gunna die as ashamed as i am to say it its true. ive just had to take a 2mg diazepam to help me chill out. i keep thinking the docs have missed somthing as i wasent this bad before i started the journey all together ! i hope it does get easier as i feel theres an underlying problem but they say its normal!
all the best buddy

Hi James and everyone else following thus thread. I didn't feel particularly anxious before starting Citalopram but as soon as I started taking it, my anxiety level soared! I couldn't sleep, I felt scared and oddly detached. I didn't feel like me at all! Iupoed the dose from 10mg to 20 mg 2 weeks ago and the side-effects started all over again. Now, after 6 weeks, anxiety has abated a good bit. I feel very low in the mornings but better in the afternoon, especially if I get out to exercise or socialise. I dip again in the evenings. I use a guided meditation on Insight Timer to help me get to sleep. It seems to work most if the time but I do wake up at intervals during the night. It is better than it was. It is a bit unfortunate that one off the side effects of Citalopram is increased anxiety at first. Other people say it takes a good while to work, 8 weeks or so, so it us a bit of an ordeal, but worth persisting. Have you tried any relaxation techniques such as yoga or mindfulness meditation?

yes it is .i have been on celexa for almost three years and until now i get the occasional aches an pains but it does not bother me because the benefits outweight the small side effects.best regards

Yes i had extreme anxiety especially after my first 2-3 months starting it. I too was in a horrible state. I also didn't think i was going to make it. . After my my first 2 weeks I couldn't sleep for a week. I was a zombie I had wanted to stop the celexa but after speaking with so many people here and reading their posts, I stayed with it. I'm so glad I did as I have my life back. My Dr prescribed me xanax which really helped me with the process of the intense side effects. Nothing I could ever imagine. Just hang in there. You can always PM me if you need to.

Hello! Im new here. I have been on Celexa for six weeks at 20 mg. I started the first week at 10 mg then went to 20mg in the second week.
I still feel very anxious during the day and night. I had anxiety before this med but seem to feel a bit worse now.
Do any of you take anti anxiety meds to deal until the med kicks in? Do you take them daily or what?
It can be very frustrating dealing with this daily. All we are looking for is relief and not feel any worse.

I started on 10 mg of Citalopram for 4 weeks and raised it to 20mg 2 weeks ago I also experienced increased anxiety when starting to take it and again when I increased the dose. It seems to be settling down a bit now, although I still have trouble going to sleep and staying asleep. I popped a diazepam last night as It was my father's funeral today and I was extra anxious. It wore off after a few hours and I was awake from 3.30 am. The problem with valium is that it is addictive. Weaning yourself off it is hard. I do find mindfulness meditation helpful but need to practise it more to find it fully effective. I hope this information helps.
