6 Weeks Post ORIF Surgery - FWB

Hi, just wanted to share my journey. I will be 6 weeks post ORIF surgery for a fractured fibula tomorrow. After 2 weeks in a cast and 4 weeks in an aircast boot with partial weight bearing I had an x-ray yesterday at the hospital and was given the all clear to start full weight bearing.
Although my foot and ankle are still fairly swollen, with the help of the Physio I was able to put weight onto my injured ankle, whilst still using two crutches. I was advised to continue with my boot outside for a couple of weeks, but inside to wear training shoes for support.
Today I was able to shuffle from one foot to the other whilst holding onto the kitchen counter and after a few attempts have been able to walk very slowly up and down the kitchen without using crutches.
I still have an incredibly long way to go, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

great , i'm two years with broken ankle in 3 places, 7 screws, dislocation and two plates. i fully understand tour journey. i'm 50 years old and i don't have any problems with the ankle at all. during my healing process i never thought that i would ever be the same. my ankle experience was the worst i ever had to go through, a long healing process. pt was the best thing for me and continued therapy on ankle when i finished with pt on my own. the ankle will swell for a while but continue cause the ankle has to get use to the weight. also the ankle with stiffen up when you sit down you will have to loosen it up to start walking again. your well on your way but a long ways to go. keep at it

Great to hear that you are two years on without any problems. Yes, I couldn't believe how debilitating the injury would be. My foot turns a funny shade of purple but the Doctor said that would be normal for up to a year - just gotta keep moving 😃

I have broken my ankle in 3 places, 3 plates many screws lol not sure exact amount of screws. I had a surgery 6 weeks ago. I started walking after 5 days. Now I can walk freely. But i wouldnt recommend y'all to do the same. My doctor told me not to put any weight till today ( actually I am at hospital waiting to be seen) I can walk without limping sometimes. My ankle is still swollen but most of the swelling around foot went away. It doesnt hurt the same, i can sleep throughout the night now. It gets stiff after sitting long time or driving. I think you should listen to your body and be extra gentle in the beginning. It got better day by day and really encouraging.

There really is no better feeling than those first few steps , (well for me anyway)...I remember every little achievement to me felt like i had won the lottery..the independence lol. You sound like you have made great progress, good luck on the rest of your journey, it can be frustrating at times as progress sometimes seems slow but we will get there in the end . 😃
