6th go at getting right

On October 26, 2015, I had my 6th lower back surgery. Four have been spinal fusion and one was to have a stimulator installed and one was to clean everything out. (Nerve Decompression) One could never call themselves a professional at this because they are always different and they always are not fun. The first one was in December 2004. Anyway, my wife and I have traveled over 500 miles to have the procedure accomplished. I would not trust ANY other doctor to do this. I firmly believe that he is the best man for the procedure. Over the past few years I have had some leg problems. But never after a fusion did I feel what I feel now. My left leg is so weak!! I can only pick it up about two inches and to get dressed, I have to use both arms to raise my leg. It is keeping me up at night and I won't walk anywhere without my walker. My doctor explained to me that because my back was such a train wreck, he chose to install seven screws and three rods after taking out the old mess. He couldn't put in an eighth screw be the previous surgeon had installed the hardware incorrectly, thus leaving a gap.

Anyway, the purpose of my post is to not criticize my doctor, for I love the guy AND his entire staff. I'm just looking for any tips, ideas or things I can do to feel better soon. I fly home in 11 days and I really want to greet my wife with a smile in lieu of a long face due to pain. And I really want the Dilaudid and Soma usage to be over! Any ideas to try? Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Good luck to everyone else going through similar back issues.~MB~

Do you have nerve pain, or pain that dilaudid and soma do not help.  If so this may be nerve pain which is a different animal.  If tolerated and pain is sever Lyrica, if not as bad  Neuotin.  These may help you sleep too.  If you already know about nerve medication, let me skip to sleeping issues.  I take Soma durring the day, but although both muscle relaxers my doc perscribes one flexaril (non-narcotic) at night only to sleep with a small amount of Clonazapam( needed to protect my jaw hardware),  I have prosthetic jaw too.  My back has been something unexpected. Sleeping pills or a larger dose of anti anxiety is an option.  I did befor with jaw issues but now choose a lighter approach and so far have een able to say it works for me.  Let me know if this helps answer your post. If not, I will try again and think harder.  Best of luck on your trip home and your reuinion with your wife.

    Michael,

Could it be drop foot caused by the fusions and the nerve decompression? I have the same problem with my left leg, very difficult to walk or do much of anything.

Best wishes and hope you find your answers
