7 days post op of Left Hip total replacement

Hello, 48 year old male here, had my left hip replaced 1 week ago today. Had general anesthesia, woke up after surgery with only mild pain. I was surprised how little I could move my operated leg. I could bend my knee ok, but couldn't lift my foot hardly at all. I could put weight on the operated leg, no problem, but lifting my leg to slide in and out of bed is the hardest part. Im doing my P.T.

every day and its getting stronger. I strongly recommend that anyone have hip replacement surgery strengthen your surgical leg before surgery if your able.

Other than my leg muscles being weak and sore, I feel the surgery was well worth it and I wish I

had it sooner, I was on the verge of a wheel chair prior to surgery.

Couldn;t agree more. I had what they term 'Trendelenberg gait' pre-op. The hip abductors - the muscles which move the leg outwards away from the body - weren't working properly. I spent months in a physio class and doing exercises at home and it really paid off. 6 weeks post-op and I'm doing two walks a day of about 800 yards. I'm just waiting for my new knee!

Hi Lonnie..don't worry about what you can't do...it'll come. I'm 7 weeks post op and probably could only lift my op leg from the foot in the lst week or so...the physio will give you bed exercises one of them is lying flat and lifting your op leg from the hip...most difficult! also sliding the leg to the side and back with the aid of a bin bag for slipperiness!

Look at the other hip threads on this forum ..it'll make you feel better and you'll know you're not alone!

There's lots of tips and ideas too gor when you get home.....

    Just keep posting...

Ros...a lady in the pool yesterday had had both knees replaced and was on her last hip....she was doing really well!

If you are really sore a friend recommended 'hot pools' which some leisure centres and hotels spa centres have. They work a bit like hydrotherapy pools and keep the weight off your sore leg.

Thanks Chris, we thought the knee would be the first joint in the queue but the hip came up on the inside lane so to speak. Follow-up clinic on Monday and I hope the rehab is going well enough for a referral for knee replacement. The knee will be more of a struggle over rehab because it hasn't been working properly for years but hey - have crutches, will travel (I've also got an automatic car and it's my left knee!).

I wish when they accept you for surgery they would organise a quick session with the physios where they could talk you through the exercises, give you a printed sheet for reference and sort out any individual problems. I'm sure most people would be prepared to attend a class where 1 physio could see 6 or 8 people at a time.
