7 days post op q2 anaemia

My haemoglobin went from 133 to 97 postoperatively.  Complicated by recurrence of possible uterine polyp with return of heavy gynae bleeds. Am on blood thinners and transexamic ic acid but not iron tablets. Anyone know if it’s ok to take iron as well? My hb went from 97 to 99 2 days post op but I’m pale (inc lips and tongue) feel nauseous on very little activity and losing hair - all of which has happened previously when my iron went doe to 88 last year...

    What do the medics/nurse say.

At the moment I’ve been told that I should avoid the deltaparin today unless we get bloods done before. But advised to go to A&E to do that today. If iron levels too low then I’ll definitely be put on iron tablets and they’ll decide whether to keep me off deltaparin to get the gynae bleeds stopped or whether with iron I can coexist on iron tablets, deltaparin and tranexamic acid and hopefully not get worse. At present I’m v pale, my hair is falling out and I feel nauseous on almost no exertion- all classic signs my hb is too low.

    Hi frances,

Poor you, you sound as if you are having an awful time. I hope you start to feel better soon. I was losing more hair when given the blood thinner apixaban for clot in the lung seven weeks after thr. Stay positive, you will improve.

Must have been very scary to have had a clot. I’ve been reading more about the risks which are very real. Forcing me to be good at exercise, moving, stockings, injections- as I’m on 1 drug that raises my risk and have been given a second but I will only use it as a last resort.

      Are you better now?

      Hi frances,

I have always exercised aerobics, pilates, using my elliptical walker, walk the dog, cook from scratch so there was no one more surprised than me,the doctors were also baffled.

I think some debris broke away from the hip at week 7 as I had a strange pain in my stomach, it happened twice, then I started to feel out of breath when walking but thought I was getting a cold as a lot of people were coughing. Because everyone focuses on the legs only, I never connected this pain to a clot. I have read up on them and now know clots can form anywhere.

I was put on apixaban for 3 months but the side effects got so bad after a month I stopped taking it, the GP said buy ginger root. I am taking bromelain, along with several other anti coagulant foods and plenty of water while praying hard.

I really want people to beaware blood clots do not only come from the legs sometimes there are no symptoms there at all.

Those values don't coinside with a hemoglobin or hematocrit which indicative of blood loss but based on your observations you should contact your doctor.

On my blood test printout it says 115-165g/l haemoglobin is normal, so it is possible that Frances has 97 haemoglobin level which would be low.

Yes correct... and my surgeon has sent me to A&E to get repeat levels done. They don’t want to stop the blood thinners but may have to if blood loss too much

So the one test they failed to do was the iron one. Instead found abnormal liver function so am going back in for a scan in 3 days.  However have finally come up with a management plan and I must stay in deltaparin. However they are adding hormone treatment in to the other stuff and iron. And hopefully that will stabilise things or sort out the gynae issue till it can be dealt with surgically.  Back to the gp or a&e tomorrow to have next attempt at getting my iron measurements again.
