Having suffered with TN since mid 90s & having 4 ops including MVD & 2 gamma knifes I would hope to be rid of these lightning bolts. On Apr 3 of this year I was in 7th emergency room in 7 days and since my pain is in the Mandibular Branch of nerve I was unable to talk, shave, brush teeth, eat
?drink or swallow without pain severe enough I wished I was dead. I was being fed intravenous daily & wished there were Tegretol patches as unable to take any meds due to tip of tongue rejecting anything getting
?close to it. Was taking appx 1,000 mg daily of Tegretol & misc amounts of Neurontin prior to being unable to ingest anything. On 7th day at emergency room Doc place a 72 hr Fentanyl Pain Patch on left arm & within 4 hrs I could speak, eat, drink, etc.... Still unable to brush teeth though. I stayed on these patches for 18 days & on 16th day pain was completely gone. July 15 pain reoccurs though I have only had 2 bouts that put me writhing on the floor. Have new pain patches, 50mcg vs previous 25mcg. So dosage is doubled. I will follow up on how these patches work in about a week. Fentanyl Pain Patches work on the central nervous system per various drug journals on the internet. Anybody else experienced with these pain patches. Also, anybody know of patches with Tegretol?

No I have not, but have you ever heard of prolotherapy? It's literally dextrose injections to the face. Or get an acupuncturist who preform electroacupuncture on your face, and head. Very helpful. Magnesium Glycinate 400mg 3 times a day for pain.

Hello Micheal, My heart goes out to you. I have also suffered these extreme bouts of pain which are so totally undescribable. My pain lasted for i and a half - two hours each time and this could happen several times a day. Even after suffering T.N. for over 20 years I had never had such terrible times as these. I was unable to move a muscle and absolutely paralysed by the pain. This followed a
Thermocoagulation day theatre surgery, but fortunately lessened after a few weeks when the nerve settled down and became the usual daily symptoms which, although pretty bad, allowed me to carry on with a semblance of normality. I've had these attacks before but they have been fairly isolated. I manage somehow to get by with a struggle but I think I can identify with your extreme pain and feel so sorry that you have gone through all this.
I haven't heard of any of the medications that you describle other than Tegretol which I have taken for many years together with Gabapentin. When I described these awful exteme attacks to my neurologist his reply was that he could ' have done nothing' -not very helpful.. I live in fear.
I do hope your new treatment has continued to help and that you will find some remission from this episode. T.N. is unpredictable, as you know, so you may find that this happens. I do hope so.
Please keep in touch and tell us your progress.
