7months later and the pain never went away-L5/S1 Laminectomy Disc Excision Neurolysis

When I was 18 (3.5 years ago) I started to experience pain in the sides of my legs. It came and went over a period of 2 years and then it was there every day from then on, it stopped me from doing sport or sitting and even studying for uni. I went to many many different people to see what was wrong with me and how it can be fixed. I went to multiple GPs, physios, chiropractors, I got acupuncher, I went to orthopedic to see if it was my feet, I went to many others over the period of these 3 years.

I finally found a GP who told me to get an MRI, which showed a bulging disc in my L5/S1, he referred me to a spinal surgeon. Within 4 months the Specialist suggested that I get an operation because I have already exhausted all other avenues. The operation I had was called a L5/S1 Laminectomy Disc Excision Neurolysis, this is where I had a bludging disc which attached itself to my spinal nerve over time, I had the operations 7 months ago (I am now 21). I was in hospital for four days and in rehabilitation for 2 weeks. Ever since then I have been doing physio daily, swimming, walking, anything that can help me recover, I have even tried multiple different painkillers and nothing is helping. The specialist said that my recovery time is expected to be 12-18 months.

After my operation I thought there was some improvement because I was becoming stronger but the pain never went away. I am really struggling with the idea that I could have this pain for another 12 months or even longer.

Has anyone every had this operation or a similar one where they have still been in pain this far from their operation? Did the pain ever go away and how did you deal with the pain?

Hi Tilly as I 've lost my sleep as early as 2 am I am able to come to the forums and to tell you so sorry I am for all your experiences of pain and discomfort at a such young age.

In same time glad to know the improvements you experience being able to move , to exercise after your surgery.

Here following the discussions on spinal problems you will have the chance to to interact with other people and to have some questions answered.

    Wish you the best.

    Take care. 🍀

Hi Tilly, I've had experience of both sides of the coin. One op worked and one didn't. The one that didn't included a Laminectomy, dicscetomy. This didnt work. I had all the same symptoms you had and these remained after the op until I had my third 4 weeks ago which has a double AILF.

Have you been to the pain clinic? If your leg pain hasn't gone it more than likely means you have nerve damage. You can get meds to try and combat this.

    Good luck
