Did this start suddenly or gradually over a period of time, Had you had any previous illness even some time ago where you were treated with Cipro or Fluoroquinolone antibiotics ? They are famous for causing later problems including insomnia.

Hi Derek,
Thanks for the reply, I had a panic attack roughly 2 years ago that started this whole thing. Sleep hasnt been great since then but was getting 3-4 hours which was enough to keep me going. This severe insomnia just started really out of the blue. Never used Cipro or Flu***** so they cant be causing the issue.
At wits end with it. Could Panic/Anxiety cause brain damage over an extended period pf time? Mind due i have been fine otherwise, its just the insomnia thats causing alot of worry.

Hi you are not alone there are thousands of people out there who have sleep problems i too am one and its a killer, unless you have been there no one understands, and without sleep it is so hard to function with everything else, work socialising , eating your whole body clock is out and on top of that you can not think straight , your mind races and you think the worse, there is so many reasons for lack of sleep , life style, worries, stress, eating habits, and a big factor is what you do before you go to bed the bedroom itself , there should be no tv in a bedroom no phones , only soft lighting for reading and reading good stuff no things that wake you up like murders , thrillers, and especially no computers or laptops doing work stuff , you have to relax your mind switch off , warm drink like hot milk , no caffeine , and try herbal remedies kinder to the body, well i hope this helps if you still have trouble seek professional help there is lots out there and there is no shame , take care

suggesting warm milk to a hard core insomniac? that's almost insulting.
mike, I hope your condition passes, it very often just suddenly gets better on its own, that's the best thing you can hope for.
but jay is right in the fact that you're not alone, take some comfort in that, and good luck.

hi, Mike. I answered your question but my post disappeared for some reason. To answer your question -yes, I've suffered from insomnia most of my life, of various degrees, but I can't say I ' ve ever had anything like you describe.
i use Valium, 5 mg, sometimes (though rarely) more, and it gives me 5-6 hrs of sleep. not perfect by any means, but enough to get by I guess. though it gets hard.
do you nap during the day to get some rest? people say it isnt a good idea, but i would kill for that luxury. i believe naps help, and if timed right (earlier in the day), I'm sure they are great help.
have you had a sleep study?

Hey Edgar,
Thanks for replying, do you take the valium every night? Unfortunately no my body just wont let sleep during the day anymore. I hear ya regarding Insomnia its a difficult beast especially when you have to function in a busy world.
2 years ago, was a completely different story no worries at all napping and sleeping. Just wish i saw the signs my body was telling me then to slow down. No sleep study booked yet but heading into Neurologist end of October. so we shall see if anything comes of it. 🙂

Good to hear zopiclone helped at least to some degree.
I must admit I do take Valium not every night, but 4-5 nights per week, and for far longer than the recommended 2 weeks period. But, as long as it is working I don't plan to quit. Not sleeping is the worst, everything else is better, at least that's how I look at it. How long is your Zopiclone prescribed for?
If it turns out you do have anxiety, I guess a benzo could work? Not that I'm suggesting anything, of course, one must always check with a doctor first.
Btw how old are you?

Hi Mike. Apart from some REM sleep are you sure you've had absolutely no sleep in 8 days? If you've tried those drugs & your still not sleeping then it needs investigating by a neurologist as it does sound like you are in a particularly bad spell of insomnia for some reason. Given what you said to someone else it sounds like anxiety could be the culprit but 8 days without anything resembling sleep isn't good for you especially if you suffer from anxiety in the first place. Like I say though if this not sleeping carries on then you do need to see a neurologist for them to investigate why.

Hi Gareth,
Fairly certain, they have been long long nights haha. Took another Zopiclone last night and worked. was so grateful. 4 hours but wow what a relief. Semi normal today but still aches and pains here and there.
Having the sleep has calmed me down a bit, its staying calm so the body can recover is what i struggle with.
Neurologist all booked in for late October. So we shall see if anything comes of it.

Hi mike. I see its been a few weeks since you posted this but i thought i would throw my two bobs worth in. Millions of people worldwide suffer insomnia. In fact its one of the most common complaints a doctor sees. I believe back problems is number one, insomnia is second. As ive posted on here many times before, in most cases what happens is we get one or two bad nights of sleep & then we start to worry about not being able to sleep & so the cycle of insomnia starts. If thats the case with you, try not to worry about not being able to sleep as this will just keep you in a continual cycle. No matter what happens sleep will come eventually. However, sometimes we can actually be asleep but not feel like it. It's called 'sleep state misperception'. So basically what that is, is that you are asleep but just not the deep restorative sleep. I get this from time to time. You will get through this. Nobody ever died from insomnia.
