8 days post op. Very positive experience!

Hello all,
I am now 8 days post op and am doing fantastic. I'm starting to think maybe my surgeon was a magician because the worst my pain has gotten so far was maybe a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. I actually stopped taking pain meds 3 days after surgery.
I'm seriously so surprised at how well things have been going and wanted to share my experience. Sorry that these are disorganized but here are some key points:

I had 1 very large external excised and 2 large internals banded. I also had a fissure I'd been dealing with since July.
Doctor's orders: start eating light 3 nights before surgery. You will probably not poop for a few days after the operation, so the food you eat a few days prior will be what your body will be passing afterwards. (I just starting having chicken noodle soup for dinner)
Did 2 enemas the morning of surgery. Barely anything came out the 2nd time around. Good sign!
I was able to talk to my anesthesiologist before the surgery. I told him I get really nauseous when I'm put under and he took great care to make sure I was comfortable. He said he would use medications that don't heavily sedate the body so I'd recover faster and he wouldn't have to use "intense" medications to wake me back up. I woke up with 0 pain and 0 nausea!
My doctor gave me some kind of numbing shot before I woke up that was supposed to last up to 72 hours to keep my pain levels down. It seemed to have work because I was literally in no pain for several days after surgery.
She said she didn't understand why doctors use gauze or any material that patients have to poop out later after surgery. She used a dissolving gel pack in my butt so I wouldn't have to worry about trying to poop it out it later. Maybe ask your doctor if they can avoid using gauze?
My first BM was 2 days post op. It was soft and painless! Definitely eat light meals in the days prior to your operation and start your stool softeners ASAP!
Doctor said NO to Metamucil or any fiber supplements. She prescribed me Colace and Miralax to stay regular, and said to take Milk of Magnesia if I went 3 days without pooping.
Don't strain when you have a BM. Your stools should literally just fall out of you as you relax and sit there. (I have a squatty potty but found leaning forward and to one side felt better)
She was very adamant on avoiding constipation at all costs:
DIARRHEA > CONSTIPATION! While diarrhea is obviously not a good thing, she said it's a LOT easier to recover from diarrhea after a hemorrhoidectomy.
Diarrhea = drink more water, ease off on the laxatives. At least you're not getting backed up.
Constipation = the longer you go without pooping, the harder the stools will get, the more you're going to get backed up, the more you're going to have to struggle to poop out later. You can also get impacted, which is definitely not something you want to deal with after you've had the surgery.
The worst day so far was actually day 6. Even though my stools had been pretty soft, for some reason my anus felt extremely dry this day and it was unpleasant to have a BM. Pain only went up to a 4 though. Definitely tolerable. Less painful than pooping with a fissure.
Sitz baths help! A nurse said to me "the hotter the better". Obviously don't burn yourself, but get it as hot as you can tolerate.
Fill a sock up with some rice. You can microwave it and hold it up to your butt for some relief. Heat = increased bloodflow to the area = helps with healing. But use an ice pack to help with inflammation. I often cycled between the two when I was dealing with a thrombosed hemorrhoid prior to surgery.
Hot/cold bidets are awesome. I had my husband install one from Amazon the week before surgery. No wiping!
So far I'm extremely happy with the results and have no regrets so far. My doctor did an amazing job! My diet hasn't changed drastically but I have made sure to eat fruits everyday (Apples and plums specifically) and limiting red meat. I also now take Colace 3x a day (All 3 at once in the morning) and Miralax around noon. I try to drink an extra glass of water here and there but honestly haven't been that extreme with upping my water intake.

I hope my story will help put some troubled minds at ease. I was honestly terrified of getting the surgery and preparing for the worst because of the many horror stories I had read. I do think my doctor was very skilled and took extra precautions to keep me out of trouble. I have my follow-up appointment with her in a few weeks and will post again with the "final" results.

This is great to hear, Katherine! Thank you for summarizing your experience so well. From all I've read about pre- and post-op, and the importance of a skilled surgeon, you approached this difficult situation with a lot of wisdom!
I have more external hems than you, so am still a chicken to go through with a full hemorroidectomy. This gives me some hope. Did you have any urinary retention from the numbing shot? What was the name of the bidet from Amazon? Thanks for any input you can give.
You are one brave and kind lady! Best wishes for full recovery and a new hems free life!

I'm so glad my post gave you hope! The internet is definitely full of frightening recovery stories, but I think that's because most people who recover just fine don't bother posting about their uneventful recoveries 😃
I had no urinary retention from the numbing shot or anesthesia. In fact, I went to the bathroom within minutes of waking up without problem!
Just a head's up, my husband ended up buying different connectors because the ones it came with didn't work with our plumbing. He also said the instructions were awful but was able to figure it out by himself. I think there's a more expensive kit that has better hardware, but my hubby preferred to buy the pieces himself anyway so he didn't mind getting the cheaper kit at all.
I'm loving not having a big blob between my butt cheeks anymore. Haha! Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. I do hope your external hems don't give you too many problems and hope they just shrink on their own. Sending all of my anti-hemorrhoid wishes your way!

Thank you. This is very reassuring. My surgery is scheduled for next week. Did your doctor prescribe any meds to take leading up to your surgery as well?

My doctor prescribed me a suppository (Neomycin + Hydrocortisone compound) and an anal cream (Nifedipine) to help heal my fissure about 2 weeks before my operation. She also had me do 2 fleet enemas the morning of-- it seems like some doctors don't have you do that but I think it helped a lot!
I hope your surgery goes extremely well!! Crossing fingers that your experience is similar to mine, if not better!

Thank you. My doctor has me starting Celebrex five days before the surgery ans Gapapentin two days before surgery and I know he will do the long acting local anesthetic as well. I can't seem to find any other patient references to that pain management regimen, but I'm hoping it works!

Hi Katherine, so good to hear your recovery is going so well. I am 10 days post op today with a much similar positive experience so far (well maybe my BMs were more ‘exciting’ 😉) In fact, I have been thinking it might be too good to be believed compared to majority of the stories. I have also posted a detailed update hoping this will put some minds at ease as they consider/prepare for the surgery. Wishing you all the best!

Just read it and am so happy to hear you're doing well! Good point about seeking out a colorectal surgeon instead of general. I had forgotten to mention that my doctor specialized in colorectal practice, which probably contributed a lot to my recovery. I'm definitely making sure to stay regular and not strain during BM's now that my hemorrhoids have been taken care of. Here's looking to our bright future without hemorrhoids! 😄

Same here with the diet. I am still super diligent about my food as my BMs are not quite painless yet. I must say it is bit boring and my cravings have taken me on a wild food adventure in the past week 😃 but the regularity is well worth it.

hi Katherine. I was just reading your post. I am day 10 of my Hemorrhoidectomy. I had three internal hemorrhoids removed. did I read your post, correctly? Your doctor just cut out your external hemorrhoid and banded the internal, correct? I think I’m doing better but I have lost my appetite. I think it’s because I have the fear of having to have a BM in the morning. I went off the strong pain med five days after surgery but I’m still alternating between ibuprofen and Tylenol every four hours. Do you think that is a bad thing?
thanks for your input and I look forward to hearing back from you.
ps: I take MiraLAX in the morning with my coffee and a fiber supplement. I also take one stool softener after I eat. Why did your doctor say no stool softener?

Hi Sharen. You are correct, I had one cut and the other two banded. I think you're fine alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen, that isn't enough to constipate you.
My doctor was okay with stool softener, i actually took 3 Colace in the morning and Miralax at noon. She said NO fiber supplements because those can cause constipation and harden stool if you're not drinking enough water. It can basically cancel out any softeners you may be taking.
Good luck with your BM, it's definitely scary to think about but better to get it out than to hold in. I would stop with the fiber supplement just to be safe.

thanks Katherine for getting back to me. I actually had a nice BM this morning and will see my colon rectal specialist in the morning. I will ask him about the fiber but since it’s working for me now, I’ll probably go ahead and take it.
I just want things back to normal. However, this coming Monday will only be two weeks so perhaps I’m doing as expected.
good luck with the banding of your two internal hemorrhoids. I hope they help you and you don’t have to go back into surgery.
God bless, Sharen
