8 on Optic Nerve damage chart caused by Glaucoma?

I have had Glaucoma for a bunch of years and have tried to keep my IOP down as low as possible. During this time I did not know much about my cupped optic nerve damage. After some nasty IOP increases resulting from a cataract procedure my right eye pressure jumped into the 40s! This led to an emergency operation with an Ahmed Implant. Both eye pressures are now at 14. I am presently on three types of drops and had hoped to discontinue some of them with the good IOP news. Instead I got a very worrisome newsflash saying my right eye is now at level 8 on a Glaucoma chart with 12 being blindness. Very worried and seeking advice. Thank you for listening.

I am recently diagnosed with glaucoma and a cataract in my left eye. I'm very worried because I was born totally blind in my right eye. I'm 71. Never heard of a chart for the level of glaucoma. Eye doctor talks about level (in terms of %) of damage to optic nerve. In my case loss is ~70% However he says correlation between nerve damage and visual acuity varies from person to person. Why not ask your ophthalmologist specifically, if any such chart exist. One eye doctor's opinion is that if I have the cataract surgery, while simultaneously lowering IOP will be beneficial - with small (he cannot quantify) risk of me going totally blind. Another ophthalmologist says, the reward of cataract surgery (given the glaucoma) is not worth the risk. She thinks I should just work aggressively to keep the pressure <10 I have researched that there is a direct relationship between pre-op and post -op IOP.
Any informed 3rd opinion will be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Sorry Carl for taking so long to reply. My first cataract removal presented problems and an elevation in IOP that diminished on its own. Before that procedure my Doc told me that lower IOP could be possible. My second cataract removal raised a lot of hell with my eye that caused the IOP to skyrocket well into the 40s and eventual Ahmed implant operation. With lots of drops both eyes are now at 14. As for the eye chart, it is on the Optomologist's wall as a reminder of Glaucoma progression. I am trying to be proactive about progression by seeing my Glaucoma specialist to keep it as closely monitored as possible. I hope this is of some help to you.
