8 week post THR still having deep sharp pain

Posted , 7 users are following.

I am 9 weeks post op and has all gone extremely well I am back at work full time and walk limp free without any aids, but I am not pain free and get this pain deep in my buttock muscle when I try to raise my leg when sitting and also when climbing up stairs. I am beginning to think this won't go away as it really hasn't improved at all.  It seems like something in the joint is not right. Not sure what to do. Maybe one of those pesky deep muscles like the gemellus or the piriformis is damaged, or maybe I am trying to do too much. Bah!

Alison, it sure could be what you mention. It could be something else. You could try to do less whenever you can for awhile and see what happens. How bad is the pain? Certainly if it continues it would warrant a trip to an orthopedist.

      Hi Annie thanks.

The pain is not so bad, I dont take any painkillers or anything but it is just nagging away there. I will rest more. I am going to Venice at the end of next week for a weeks holiday so I hope to rest then. Although will probably be doing a lot of walking.

Could it be a touch of sciatica, it's possible you need to rest up a bit more.  As Annie said, might be best to go and see someone.

      Thanks Lynn

I will take it easy and see how I feel after my holiday.  If not getting better I will definitely see about it.

    Hi Alison,

Oh, Venice  ??? that should be great !!!

It probably is that big muscle that is still healing - you know, keeping you balanced while walking, adjusting your posture and the hardware settling in - I read somewhere that this can take up to a year ...

Maybe limit the sitting leg raises -

I am not a doctor, so please, have it checked out - can you go before you go to Venice?

    big warm hug

Thanks renee I am probably being too impatient.  Do you think I will be able to get in or mores the point out of a gondola?

    Hi Alison,

If you feel something isn't right I think it's worth checking out, just for your peace of mind.  Of course, 8 weeks is still early and we all know there's still a lot of healing going on.  The problems you describe sound similar to what I was having pre-op.  I couldn't raise my foot from the floor when sitting - I used to have to lift my leg into the car.   The physio said it was all to do with muscle weakness and I was given stretching exercises to help similar to the post op physio.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Cels I will.  Once I am back from hols I will see how I am.  Maybe the wine and food and relaxation will be all I need.

Sorry you're having continued pains, I am 13 weeks and back to work too, and also having buttock pains, but not when climbing stairs - the golf balls are back with avengance. sad

I keep going for a walk around the building every hour, or making coffee, so I am going to try to get hold of a different chair next week, see if that improves things at all.

It's just nice to get home on my comfy soft cushioned cane chair in the conservatory with the animals - who miss me it seems.  Rocketwoman says the cat keeps going around searching for me.  Nice to be missed.

      Hi Graham

Thats great you are back at work but I agree it has its downside.  I am thinking I am overdoing it a bit.  Keep clenching those buttocks!

Take care and enjoy your weekend.

My cat has no time for me really although he loves my hubby. I guess its because he normally feeds him.  Cats are so fickle!

Purrrcisely right - he knows who feeds him.  cheesygrin

It's so easy to overdo it isn't it - right the way through recovery.  I started at 4 hours per day this week (3 day week), increasing by 30 mins each time, so I was in for 5 hours today, but it is so tiring and I make sure I relax when I get home and don't plan anything on the 'rest days'.

Take care, and have a good weekend
