8 weeks post ankle surgery

Hello!

So this Thursday I have my follow-up appointment with my surgeon following a talus fracture and repair of damaged tissues - another bone also had to be broken to repair the talus, but according to my x-ray that bone is in place and is healing well. As for the talus, it is in place, but it is not clear yet as to whether it is starting to calcify and rejoin.

I was put in a boot 4 weeks post op with a further 4 weeks non-weight bearing which takes me to Thursday when I have been told I will start weight bearing. I am so excited for the appointment and just want it to be here now! This has been such an isolating time, especially doing this after we have just gone through a pandemic and lockdowns.

My question is- is it likely that I will be able to walk in regular shoes, or will I need to continue with the boot? There isn't any swelling or significant pain at the moment, but I would be curious to know whether others were able to just go for it in a shoe full weight bearing, or whether it was a longer process.

I look forward to hearing others experiences and appreciate any information before my appointment in a couple of days time!

Thank you!

Listen to your doctor and plz don’t test your ankle that much.

Your ankle should be fine and back to normal after a while just have some patience.

Make sure to do your abc if the doctor gave your the green light

To be honest I'd expect another 3 to 6 weeks in your boot while full weight bearing. You'll be able to sit and relax with it off but be prepared to be informed that you'll be wearing that boot a bit longer.

I'm at week 11 now walking in the boot. I've made very small trips without it but nothing substantial. There is some stretching, and movement issues that will follow after the boot. It's not just a simple get up and go injury and recovery. It's a long, slow and frustrating process unfortunately.

All I can suggest is listen to your doctor and PT and not try to rush things.

just got the green light for weigh bearing in the boot! will start PT next week. so awkward and bumpy so far. trying to start walking with a walker. feels so strange being off my feet for 8 weeks now. the good leg was either hopping with the walker or scooting with the knee scooter. i sorta felt like I forgot how to walk. still trying to get my heel down and flexibility in ankle....

you do sorta forget how to walk. PT will definitely help!

stretching in the morning and evening is everything! I can't emphasize this point enough. I know while still in the boot your stretches will be limited to moving your foot up and down, but its important!

still lots to do but you are well on your way!
