8 weeks post op

here I am again...It's a God send to read all the posts. Very encouraging and informative. When we think we are unique, just keep reading and find others with same issue. "RAW" yes, I too have the feeling of my knee being very, very sensitive. When I touch it yes, it feels RAW! Like skin barely covers the nerves. My PT advised to de sensitize the area by using various fabrics to gently massage, alternatinfg from rough to medium to soft. I'm 8 weeks post op and some nights the pain is 10 with no relief from the oxy. May have become immune to it and wonder what else I may try? Last night I tried 2 alleve and 1 tylenol....helped a bit but not enough to help me sleep. Here I am a new "great granma", but that little girl inside still wants her mama!!! redface

R u sure that Aleve and Tylenol can be taken together?? I would check. If u can't sleep, use Advil or Tylenol PM, but not together.

I was on codeine so I don't know about the oxy.

things will get better. I am at 15 weeks and am doing very well. I sleep well, if I do t use my iPad before sleep. The blue lite emitted is disruptive to the melatonin that induces sleep.

Feel better and I know what u mean about wanting mommy!!

    Marge,

dont do the alive and Tylenol.  I am on oxy and added 2 extra strength Tylenol pm, per doc to that.  Check with your doc first. This has allowed me to sleep for 4 -6 hours.  I went back to surgeon today and he gave me Tramadol to use at night.....he said the oxy interferes with sleep for most people....I am 7 weeks post op.

i have to admit....my 83 yr old Mom came and stayed with me for 4 nights when I was 4 weeks post op.....just her being here relaxed me.  I understand...and I am a grandma of 6.

Try taking your night pills a little earlier and then relax, if you have a hot drink make it something herbal; you can get really nice night tea, different brands, different tastes. I am always experimenting and haven't found a yucky one yet!  Also try a heat pad on your knee when in bed (forget the ice, who wants clammy bed clothes).  If your meds are not touching the pain go back to your doctor.  They do not know the intensity of your pain unless you tell them.  Be persistent. You are not supposed to be in pain.  Pain also hinders your recovery.  Think about it; during the day you take meds every 4 or so.  How long are you in bed at night for????

Hope you ge some relief soon

Yep makes sense Sue..  we gotta be proactive about our own bodies and get to our dr when we feel the unusual stuff happening to us. I sometimes need a big push and this forum is MY PUSH! TKS ALL

Let your pain be your push.  Had my prescription renewed today, different doctor (same surgery). First question- How are you, how you coping. 2nd question-Do you feel you are on the right dosage, would you like and increase. Answers from me were fine thanks and no thank you.  Then we had a brief chat and that was that.  I cannot believe I am the only person who has a GP that is watchful and not prepared to see their patients in pain. Their attitude is "If you are in pain and need to increase, do so.  If you run out come back and we'll have a chat and do some tweaking".  I would rather go to bed early than increase my meds, but it is nice to know that I have that sort of back-up.

My prescriptions are monthly from the GP (or  use their online site) and I have a health check every few months I have to sign for the meds at the pharmacy.  The local pharmacy I use have a Health & Safety ruling that every now and then they sit and talk to you regarding the drugs you are on and that you are aware they are addictive.  If I go away and forget to take ample supply and walk into a pharmacy I have to jump through all sorts of hoops, nothing can be done by email, has to be done by fax, the pharmascist has to speak with my GP as do I (to make sure I am me) and I have to supply my drivers licence, and because I still use my paper one, show my passport.  As you can imagine, I wont do that again!  What I am saying is, your GP is there for you, they can't help you if you can't talk to them.  Be brave, don't stay in pain. Have a lovely weekend x

I was using an oxy/tylenol combo that worked real well, plus Tramadol in between.  I still use Tramadol at night (I am at 16 weeks).

I hear what you are saying about sensitivity on the scar.  I had the same issue, had to sleep with the leg uncovered (and it was winter to boot).

Eventually that does subside but it's still sensitive.  I rub in some Vitamin E oil before bed to soften it up and loosen the scar tissue.  Give it a shot and good luck!

Have you tried the wrapping the leg in clingfilm at night? It's on youtube. I had my PKR 6 months ago but hadn't heard of it. Due to have left knee done next week so might give it a try if I have difficult nights. Best of luck with your recovery .

OXY and Tylenol PM? Gonna try these tips tonight. What about hydrocodon?
    • Posted

Marge yes u can do hydrocodon and Tylenol pm together too.  Doc did tell me today the Oxy is probably interfering with my sleep....type of drug and hydrocodon is the same type.  It at least got me a good few hours straight.  I am excited about the Tramadol he gave me today....will advise.

For me, at least, Tramadol works great to dull the throbbing and let me sleep. I've been getting about 8 hours since week 8 thanks to it.

Telcpa,  oh I hope it does the same for me.  That is exactly why doc prescribed it today.  What dosage of Tramadol?  He gave me 50mg and I can take 1 or 2 at bedtime....just wondering.

      Tim,

thanks....I took the Tramadol and slept like a baby last night.  9pm till 8:30 this morning.....yes I woke a little once or twice....slowly moved my leg to new position and fell right back to sleep.  No waking to the throbbing.
