8 yr old w/only extreme fatigue

Hi everyone! My DD is 8 years old and woke up last Sunday extremely tired and complaining of feeling off. There was 1 day where she had low grade fevers but otherwise her exhaustion has been consistent and she says her body aches at the end of the day even though she has been spending her days resting in bed or on the on couch. We went to get blood tests done on Friday (6th day sick). Some tests results back that show everything is normal but the mono tests aren't back yet. The nurse said it's unusual for a kid her age to only have fatigue not accompanied by a sore throat or fever. My question is have any of you only had exhaustion as your only symptom??

hey monica! just wanted to say my sister actually had it in 3rd grade and only had bad migraines for about 8 months with it just that one symptom nothing else.. i think it can be common young to only experience one or two symptoms from mono and not sore throat as my sister didnt have any throat issues either with it

thanks for the reply! she has slight headaches sometimes but it comes and goes. definitely not migraine level but the exhaustion is constant and her body aches when she exerts herself (even just walking a few feet to the bathroom). how soon did they diagnose mono? we are waiting for blood test results that we had done on Friday but that was 6 days into being ill--not sure if it was long enough since i heard it takes time for you to have positive result even by blood.

    Hi Monica,

So sorry to hear that your daughter has been feeling so unwell, you've definitely done the right thing going to get tests and things, and I hope it can be of some comfort that most of the test results have showed as normal. I hope that you don't have to wait long for the mono test results. Even if it is mono, I want to reassure you that although it never is a good thing to get mono, it can be better to get it as a younger child than as a teenager or adult. I think that younger children can definitely get it over it much more quickly and get back to a normal way of life easier than someone who is a bit older with this virus.

But of course just wait and see what the results say, just hoping very much that this is just a short-term bug that your daughter has picked up and that she is feeling much better soon. Let us know how the results go and of course remember you can post here any time if any concerns about mono or anything. Thinking of you and believing God will get your daughter through this.

    Hi Monica,

I had mono for the first time as a teenager (I have a reactivated case now). All I remember about getting it then is fatigue - coming home from school and just falling asleep on the floor! No other symptoms stood out.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon!

Thanks for responding. Fatigue seems to be the main and sometimes only symptom so I was really surprised that the nurse made that comment about how more symptoms typically accompany mono. I feel like those in the medical field who arent very experienced recite what textbooks say. They dont listen to their patients and understand that every patient/reaction is different bc we arent all built the same way. And Im sorry to hear your mono has reactivated 😦 Sending you good vibes for a speedy recovery.
