84 year old mother with knee giving way

Hello,

My Mothers knee used to give way……kind of “Kink” and made her stop walking.

Then she went to doctor and did some physio and it hasn’t given way since, but still kind of “juts forward sometimes”

She kind of presses it at the front and says that “puts it back in”. She has been to see the doctor but he says just avoid carrying heavy shopping.

Does she need an x-ray? Or an MRI scan?

An x-ray by an orthopedic surgeon is the first thing done to rule out any structural issue. If that one's clean, the ortho will have to determine what part of the knee is causing the problem. Cannot diagnose without the exam. The doc will push, pull, bend and twist the knee with each movement ruling out a specific area (meniscus, ACL, etc.) until the problem is identified. Only then can the doc recommend a treatment plan. MRIs are often inconclusive for soft tissue injuries. The exam is better.
