9 long.......long weeks!

I am now 9 weeks further. Next week will be my appointment at the psychiatrist. 15 mg a day ........ 9 weeks ........ no improvement whatsoever, it just got worse. 24/7 anxiety and now, because there seems to be no end, also depression. I try to keep positive self talk as much as possible but for meditation I am really too restless. No idea what to do next. That is also my question to you. Would this medication really not be suitable for me or are there more people than Lois and Katecogs who only saw improvement after a longer period of time? Increasing seems to me now not an option and with benzos I have very bad experience. That is why my doctor prescribed citalopram for me. I would like to hear your honest opinion.

    Hi Dutchy

Citalopram took a fair while to kick in for me. I was initially on 20mgs. My doctor gave me no warnings of the side effects..increased anxiety, inability to sleep and lack of appetite. I changed to a lady Dr who upped my dose to 40mgs, prescribed benzos to help with increased anxiety on a short term basis and told me you won't come right overnight, but it will happen!!.

I stuck at it, talked to others on here, started couselling, embraced healthy eating and exercise and finally regained my mojo.

It took a good 9 to 12 months for me to feel confident that I had a good handle on my anxiety.

I've been on citalopram for 4 years now.

    Hi Dutchy

This is my third time on cit.

Been taking 10mg since end of August 2018, so 8 months in total. It has taken ages this time to feel vaguely normal again. I do understand your frustration

My anxiety and depression are still there underneath, some days more noticeable than others, but I am a whole lot better when I compare myself to last June/July.

So yes, it is quite normal for antidepressants to take a while. Personally I find that I have to do things which help them to work, also, such as getting enough sleep, exercising, eating properly. I also meditate but I know that's not for everyone. I find it helps to calm me.

Hope this answer helps. Take care,

    Ruth.
