9 Weeks in and still having pain?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I am almost 9 weeks in now from scarf and akin to both feet. I am probably expecting too much too soon - but both my feet feel quite tight a lot of the time around the toes. Physio has me trying to walk through the swelling that i have which feels like i am walking on a big lump on the ball of my feet.  I have noticed some gradual improvement here but wondered if it is normal to still be experiencing this pain. I still have to take a few painkillers during the day to help.

I had those sort of pains at 9 weeks Margo, think that's quite normal. I found wearing a pair of socks with double thick soles plus a gel shoe liner in my trainers helped me with that particular pain and yes your physio is right, I found walking through the pain really does hel. I use a step count app on my phone, found that to brilliant! Great for recording my progress, good for and motivation plus for me realising just how many steps my recovering foot is doing every day is nothing short of amazing, certainly it's made me feel far less impatient with my recovery!!! Wishing you ongoing   good recovery Margot.

Thankyou for the your reply bee. I am conscious that i should be getting back to work soon, but at the moment i dont feel stable enough for that. I am walking again albeit extremely slowly. My consultant had said a 3 month recovery for one or two feet, but i now think it has to be slightly more time for to recover with 2. However, thankyou for helping me realise that it does get better. Advice from people like you who have been there and done it is invalable.

Walking again after having both feet done must be vastly more difficult. I've only had one foot operated on so far but  I'm sure you'll find the same , that you'll slowly be making improvements every day without realising it.  What seemed a long distance  to walk one week, you can easily walk  the following week.  The discomfort does seems to move around your foot from week to week and to be honest I do still have some at 3.5 months but for me it really is discomfort, not pain, it really does get better. Hang in there!!

I am 9 weeks with only one foot done, but also had hammer toe on same foot. I have been very careful and keeping my foot raised quite a lot during the day and so been keeping the swelling down.  But this week I have not had my foot raised because of spending time with my grandchildren during half term holidays.  Now my foot is so swollen especially at the ankle and yes it does feeling like I'm walking on a ball at times, it's the tightness that makes it difficult to walk though.  I'm so disappointed, really thought things would be better by now, I don't know how people get on if they have to,return to work.  My surgeon did warn me though that my swelling will be up and down up to six months or more!

Thanks barbara. My surgeon warned me too at 6 week check that the swelling would take some months to go down. I keep measuring my feet but they dont seem to be going down much - although they are a bit smaller in the morning. My physio told me to keep my feet down for most of the day now and only elevate when i have been for a big shop for exampe. People are noticing that i am walking a bit better now but i am still very slow (trying to concentrate on getting a proper step from heel to toe - which can be quite painful) I hope you continue to see improvements barbara.

Thanks for reply.  I wonder has anyone explained why the foot swells, I can understand the pain from different parts of foot because it has to adjust to the repositioning of the metatarsal big toe?  I should admit too that walking is becoming far easier with the heel to toe movement when my foot isn't swollen, but I too can only where Velcro sandals.  I think your physio advice sensible, and I think I will still raise my foot anytime I sit in my recliner arm chair.  Just one more thing.  I've been drinking one cup of detox tea each day, and with the light massage of the foot and each side of calf and underneath the knee I found my swelling to improve, that was before this week which has been busy with my grandchildren.

Yes, nobody has been able to explain this to me, but, my daughter-in-law who was giving me a massage the other day said something to me about 'needing' the swelling. I looked into swelling and apparently without it there would be no recovery to injured parts. Why it is with us so long though is what i cant understand.

Do you also get a feeling of walking on a bed of nails when walking through the swollen part of underneath foot and toes. I get this for the first 2/4 steps every time i do any foot mmovements.

Thanks for the tip on detox tea. Don't think it will taste very good but worth a go along with my epsom salt soaks.

I think my underfoot feeling is to do with the hammer toe fixing.  I am not very pleased with the recovery or the result of this, but I'll have to be patient.  I might try the soak though, I have one of these foot baths not used for ages, I've been thinking of using it now my wounds are healed.

everything I'm hearing here is very encouraging. I had a bunionectomy and 2. Hammer toes on the same foot operated on  in Feb. I wish my doctor would have been more specific with what to expect. I went back to work after 7 weeks, wearing sneakers up until 3 weeks ago. I'm glad someone commented that the discomfort moves all around the foot. Mine are much better, but still swell if I'm on them too long. But it does seem to get better each week.

Thanks toni. It seems to be a common problem doesn't it? Not knowing what to expect with regards to walking and pain once we have the go ahead. I cant believe you managed to go back to work after 7 weeks. My feet are both still very swollen and cant get anything other than a velcro sandal on. I'm hoping i start to see reduction in the swelling but noboy seems to be able to throw any light on this for me other than it will get better. Glad you're seeing iprovements each week. It does help even if it is just small things.
