My 9 year old grandson is a promising footballer, he has been traning with a premier league develpmeny group. Sadly he is experiencing severe pain in both heels after training and playing. I have Pantar Fasciitis and the symptons he has sound the same as mine. How common is PF in youngsters and is there any cure for him?

Plantar Fascitis can have different causes so diagnosing it properly is very important.  As far as I know 90% of it can be treated and dissapears within two or so months.  In my case it was physio,  taping  my feet in a specific way as well as wearing gel inserts in my shoes.  I think it took longer then two months but it did not re-occure for several years now so I am hoping that it was just one off inflamation.  Sometimes more aggressive treatment like steroid injections is used.  All the best

If he's 9 then it could be Severs disease, basically where he's grown too quickly and there's aggravation of parts of the heel. Catch it early and he'll be fine, I played through it and have been out of sports for 5 years now. See a podiatrist and/or physio I suggest. Hope he gets better

totally agree with physio and podiatrist advise

they are often much more worth spending money on then specialists

If you've had it then you know....there's no 1 thing that you can say..yes do this and it will be gone. He's so young and I'm so sorry for him...but I would definately take him to a specialist to see if this is a nerve issue or something else. Alot of people think they have PF, but it's not at all. You don't usually hear of it in kids his age. But...yes it can go away but you have to try lots of different things usually and see what works for him. Try rolling his foot on a frozen plastic water bottle. That worked for my right foot...it totally was gone when I got thru rolling my right foot. But it did not work for my left foot and I've had it for nearly 2 years in that foot. Anyway, please get him diagnosed and let us know!! Sincerely, ladyjack51

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have booked him an appointment with a physio and his GP. From the replies and my googling, it could be that his problem is PF or Severs Disease. My worry is that he is young for both of those. He would be devastated if he had to give up football. His is on par with his twin brother in terms of strength and skill but his problem has slowed him down.
