9 year old with perthes

Our daughter was diagnoised with perthes the end of last year. She has been in traction for a week, she uses crutches when she is really sore and has to take 4 paracetamols and nurofen 4 times a day on a daily basis as the pain is that bad. She is also type 1 diabetic. Any other suggestions that could help to ease the pain a bit for our daughter.

Hi there, our son has perthes disease, he has had it from being age 5 and is now age 8, he has coped brilliantly even though he lost nearly all the femure head. It now looks as though he is going to be one of the unlucky 10% who get it in both legs, confirmed by an xray today.

I give him a warm bath every morning and evening to help soothe and loosen the muscles and ligaments, bike riding and swimming are also a good way of keeping the joint supple and strong as they are non weight bearing activities and it takes the mind off the pain for a llittle while - stop if your little girl gets tired or sore, but encourage it again another day, its a good way of keeping her in touch with her friends and not feeling left out or different. Plenty of rest when she needs it, pain relief and brufen.

Nobody understands the worry and strain and how much this can hurt a little one untill they see it for themselves.

Hope this helps, Love & best wishes to you and your little girl.

    xxxxxx

The best thing I did to ease the pain was to go swimming or a warm bath. I was 3 when I got it and I had an operation at 4. I am now 32.

Your childs pain tollerance will increase as the years go on but any distraction is a good one.

The best thing my parents did for me is that they put what I wanted i.e a glass of water out of my reach and made me get it if I was thirsty enough. This was the best medicine I had. It seems cruel but in my adulthood it has given me grit and determination to walk on.

My pain barrier is very high now and when i had my last op in 2004 the doctors couldn't believe I wasn't complaining.

Taking pain killers at a young age will eventually become useless for later life. I know it sounds cruel but finding something she can do that eases the pain would be better than a pill. Painkilling tablets only work for a while as your body gets used to them and they don't work and then you need stronger ones. Be careful that another problem is not created.

    I wish you luck xxx
