Raised chair without feet elevated ? Huge fear of dislocation and being back at beginning again :-/

Get a reclining chair I had no problems dislocation is very rare, only 2 people in the year that I have been here, 1) she was picking up washing from the kitchen floor 2) she fell from a chair reaching up for a high object.  If you are careful, all should be ok just dont bend for things use your grabber, or just leave things where they are....

My surgeon (yes, they each have their opinion) said that it is best to obey the 90 degree rule for a minimum of 6 weeks. He actuallt told me that he would prefer 12 weeks!

When I said that the physio (in the same hospital) said it was old school and did not apply anymore - he retorted that whilst the physio was technically correct, it was not down to the physio to do the surgery again if their is a dislocation. AND, that the physio would not be the one suffering - I would! He went on to say that the longer we keep to the 90 degree rule, the stronger the bond around the capsule will become.

But I have not been so careful after the fist 6 weeks.

In a chair, normally knees should be below hips - thus stopping you from breaking the 90 degree rule.

In a recliner, the knees can be higher, as long as you are reclined.

In bed, youcan sit with your back propped up, but no bending forward.  You can raise your feet a bit, but your back should then not be perfectly upright, but sloped slightly to prevent bending those hips.

    Best wishes

    Hi Khippie -

I was very confused in the beginning too and had everybody show me when the 90

degree rule was broken - Sitting straight up, legs in front on pillow is OK - make sure your butt is higher than knees -

No crossing of legs or even ankles , no twisting at waist (turn around with little steps) , no bending down unless doing the golfer's leg thingy , to pick up something -

Ian is right, it is rare that dislocation takes place except for falling or badly twisting -

And from the one time I did forget the rule and tried to bend over, my body certainly let me know before it got to a dangerous stage.

I think your body is good at telling you not to do something I have tried to turn over on my side in bed whilst being asleep a couple of times, soon woke up with pain all down my side then didn't dare move for a few minutes in case I had done something x

      Hi Jill

I was told to follow 90deg, my physio was very strict said the longer i follow the better. I am going for my 6 week check up with surgeon and its on my list of questions so will be interesting to see what he says as the rest are right so many different answers to alot of these questions lol.

Michael is right i found that my body let me know real quick if i was bending wrong and i stopped really quick and rested after.
