A bit of a worry...

Hi everybody,

Anyone else seen that some MicroPort implants have been recalled due to high failure rates....wonder how many people know what make of implant they have. I am not certain but everything points to me having a MicroPort implant...they supply everything for the type of approach I had. Due for 12 month x-ray Wed, hope no cracks have appeared In stem. Tho I am still not right, much weakness and pains now and then from knee mostly but working up into groin and over outer hip.

All the best to hippies everywhere. Jay

I had resurfacing 8 yrs ago - it was de puy metal on metal implants . All metal on metal implants were recalled in Uk last summer to check  for shearing off of microscopic metal bits  / blood Poisoning . The de puy ones have been since been found to have a manufacturing fault . My blood test was ok but subsequent x ray / mri showed the femur was fractured where the head screwed in - hence had to have urgent conversion to THR . Not sure where you are but in UK we have the National joint registry where the type / serial number of every prothesisimplanted is registered - that followed the 3M hip problem were they failed and had yo be redone - affected a friend of mine whod only been in his 30,s the first time round so he had redos in his 40,s poor chap

Hi again Jason - im not aware of any problems with the ceramic ones - only the metal on metal - but yes , ask your surgeon for a photocopy of the sheet that was sent to the NJR - always handy to have your own copy . I only needed mine revising be ause it was a soecific issue with the metal on metal inplant - knee pain could be referred from the hip area but surgeon should be able to help you with that one - hope appt goes well xx

As there is a problem with my ceramic insert, I insisted on knowing what the surgeon had put inside me - and he gave me a copy of his sheet with the identity labels from the products, including the screws!  I now have that detail safely in my SOS Talisman.

The sheet is very detailed, make, model, size and 'Lot number' for each component.  Acetabular Shell, Acetabular Insert, Femoral Stem, Ceramic Head, and two domed screws.

Mine are BioMet, so I'm not affected.

Hi Graham, all I know is I had super path approach with c-on-c inserts and microport make the toolkit and parts for that method, hopefully see consultant after x-ray next week....

I would defintely ask what you have in there - just in case of a recall, and hopefully to reassure yourself in future recalls that they do not include you.

      Hi Jason,

just catching up up on how you are doing since your 1 year check?

i remember you were having some problems with your knee?

i had been struggling a bit with recovery (although I'm only just under 3 months in), particularly due to back problems.

have had 2 sessions now with a local sports therapist and injury rehabilitation specialist . It's really helped already.

i know that you are in rugby (at least I think you are), so thought I'd mention them to you.

      peak performance on Somers road.

they seem to really know what they are doing. It might help?

      regards,

      lindsey

Thank Jay for this timely post - I see my surgeon on Monday for my 6-week check-up and will add this to my list of questions.

Feel free to add thoughts for my draft list:

    - what restrictions must I continue to follow and for how long?

    - how long will discomfort sitting last and how can I improve this?

    - what can I do to re-establish a more normal sleep pattern?

    - if he needed a THR, would consider stem cell therapy to regenerate cartilage as a viable alternative?

    - what is the exact model information for the prosthetics implanted and does his office routinely monitor for any recalls or concerns?

Actually - perhaps this would be a useful new discussion thread ...

    Hi Jason,

if if you need to know before weds, you could always call Mike cronin's secretary at UCHW.

she is pretty responsive, and may well get back to you this afternoon.

i didnt ask what implant I had (Mike was my surgeon too), so can't help you there.

i know that pansycat had Mike Cronin as her surgeon. Maybe you could message her directly, as she may know.

sorry to hear you are having pains. Are you still seeing the physios regularly? You were very upbeat about your physical state last time we "spoke" , although you were troubled by your knee.

    have things deteriorated since then?

do let us know when you find out ......

i'm just on the other side of a big panic about psoas tendinitis ..... Not going to take another one on just yet (unless I need to that is).

    good luck on Wednesday.

    Hi again Jason,

been doing some digging...... The micro port implant that was recalled is a cobalt chrome (ie metal) implant. This is NOT the same as ceramic on ceramic.

as far as I know, Mike Cronin uses ceramic on ceramic as his specialism is in treating patients who need longevity out of their hip ie those 50 years or so and younger.

i definitely had ceramic on ceramic, and I'm assuming that you did too (from previous messages to me you explained that Mike was using this approach on you to ensure longevity).

so, in a nutshell, don't think you need to worry over the weekend.

    lindsey x
