A bit scared

I had a scan last week to look at my gallstone, I have a small stone and I have always assumed the pain I get is from it, but my new consultant doesn't agree. Anyway at my scan I was asked if anyone had ever talked to me about my liver. I asked why and he's said it was showing signs of texture and it showed up bright on the scan.  When I said how concerned I was as my mum dies of liver chirosis . He said oh it probably just fat accumulating. I sort of felt fobbed of.  The speed with which they process results around her could take forever and I am trying not to panic that the pai In  am experiencing can't is my liver, but failing. Also wouldn't they have seen it in my previous two scans of my gallbladder??

Has your consultant said anything about having a fibroscan or blood tests to see if you have fatty liver.

I have fatty liver my weight was 9st 7 lb, I was told to loose some weight my bmi was 25.now I weigh 8st. 10lb. I feel better and my fibroscan went down front 10.1 to 7.1

I was also told to get more exercise.

I have never drank alcohol so that's not a problem, if you drink i would advise you to stop.

The liver can repair it's self if we do the right things.

Don't worry but ask questions and ask for tests.

sorry your mum died of chrosis, don't think it's happening to you , you don't know if you have fatty liver yet.

Thanks holly. I have had no further test as my Gp and consultant have not actually seen then results yet. I guess I am just panicking. It doesn't help I have pain a lot of the time user my ribs and was told it was gallbladder but now they are questioning whether it is or not.  I guess I just have to wait for results to filter through and see what they say then.

Sorry meant to add. I haven't drunk for some time and never drank to excess apart for the odd teenage party or two.  I have radically changed my diet as I am very overweight and thought what I was eating was what was causing the gallbladder pain. I have lost a stone and half since Febuary and am rapidly going off eating as everything seems to set the pain off.

I had uncomfortable feeling in my right side going round to my back.it's not as bad now but dr thought it was due to trapped nerve in my back.I have also had my gallbladder removed I didn't have stones but it was infected. I am waiting for some more blood test results , I don't have to go back to hospital for 2 years.

I have also cut sugar and salt and eat a low fat diet.

      try not to worry

Just fat accumulting is not good anyway, not if you want to feel healthy.  If you have a fatty liver you probably have a high ferritin iron level.  Did dr test your Iron Studies?  You can reduce fatty liver by eliminating sugars and starches like Holly said.  You will also lose weight around your middle too.

If your mum died of cirrhosis of the liver and she was not a heavy drinker, it is a sure sign of haemochromatosis.  Your Iron studies will give you a good idea about that, and if your transferrin saturation % is also >45 you should have a genetic test.

My dr is rubbish and has done very little, it's mostly A&E that have done the tests when I turn up in pain. I have had pain on and off for 4 years. First I was told it was stress then irritable bowl, then stress again, when the pains started jumping into my chest they send me for heart tests, all was clear, so it was put down to stress again. I had a very good emergency Dr who told me to get my gallbladder checked and it took me ages to persuade my Dr for me to be checked.  then when I go to the scan they told me he had only ordered a kidney scan not a gallbladder one.  It's been a catalogue of disasters. somewher along the line I had blood test but the results were never discussed.  If I could afford it I would go private but I have to wait for the good old NHS to plod along in there own sweet merry way and I am getting progressively more and more pain. As I am now worried about my liver I have stopped all pain killers so now I'm unbearable , sorry for the ramble but I am getting very frustrated . I did try and be more pushy and that just got me no where as I think they actually then delayed things on purpose, my consultant is very arrogant. I will go back to my Gp and push for tests so I know where I stand. My mums liver problems were caused by a treatment she recieved years before I was born and she died when I was wuite Young so don't really have all the facts.

    Thanks for listening

All your test results should have been sent to your gp.  Ask your gp for copies of these test results to take home with you.  Then you can check them for yourself.  Blood test results usually always show what the normal range is and therefore you can tell if you are over or under.    They might even have an H or L beside them or be highlighted.  Any tests that you do not understand what they are because they are just a series of alphabetic letters, then google them.

You will soon get to know what is what and you can query your gp to explain to you why this is low, or this is high.

      Good luck
