I feel for you Margaret, about six months before my op we had a walk in shower installed, I was having difficulties getting in a bath anyway therefore, did not have a problem washing. I had a shower the day after op in the hospital, a young nurse told me I could as the plaster covering the clips is waterproof.

Please take care with getting in and out of a bath, everyone is different but, some people have been told three months which is the length of time precautions are in force.

I like having a bath, but waited until 12 weeks post op. I actually found it quite difficult getting in and out of the bath initially! (We only have a shower over the bath, but I managed from day 3 using a couple of kids plastic steps, my crutch, and my husband...)

I tried to have a bath in my roll top bath after 3 months. Got in but panicked and couldn't get out .So left it another 3 months until everything was signed off. JUST BE CAREFUL HOW YOU LIFT HIP LEG OUT!

When you take the plunge, be sure to lead with non operated leg, ease down gradually. You will need strong arms.

On the way out turn around on to all fours, gently and carefully pull yourself up into a standing position, and then use non operated leg to step out. If possible have someone or something to hold onto just in case.

Lots of bath and non slip mats.

Plan how you will do it before having the bath. Have someone with you should you get stuck!

    ENJOY!!

I really miss my soaks and terrified to take the plunge! i am having my second hip done on Monday so i will have a long time to wait! when i get over the worst of my surgery i am going back to the gym and going to concentrate on strengthening my arms and legs, as i think i would struggle getting in and out of bath. i have a separate shower so at least i dont have to worry about negotiating the shower over bath thank goodness! great advice by the way

    Hi Margaret,

I feel your pain lol.. I am now nearly 12 weeks post op for RHR and love my baths 😁😁... I finally managed it at 10 weeks and it was fabulous lol... I was fine getting in and out but my advice is just make sure you have everything you need beside you as the manoeuvreing when IN the bath is a challenge 😁... good luck and ENJOY!!

    Jen
