A chronic cough since 2 months

My father had been coughing chronically for 2 months or more..
He had visited 5 doctors or more and entered the hospital twice but no progress..
he goes breathless sometimes and gets muscle tensions from the sharpness of the coughs..
his tone started to disappear and couldn't talk a lot for a while..
he has no allergies as we know...
he is 59 years old and was a smoker for 40 years but stopped since a month or so...
he had done a CT scan and there's nothing wrong with his lungs or so...
he takes many medicines but nothing worked so far...
last night he couldn't sleep as he kept coughing all night long...
he is hopeless and is giving up and I have nothing to do and I'm not capable of doing anything...
PLEASE HELP!

I have the same thing, I stopped smoking 6 months ago and then developed this chronic cough with a wheeze and tight throat including the feeling that I have to breathe deeply all the time - have had bloods, chest xrays, spirometery test and now being treated for asthma which to be fair is not really working a great deal, I am 36 and now worry that if they refer me to Respiratory services to look for unlikely causes for my symptoms as my Dr suggested they will do a CT scan and discover some cancerous lung tumor!

Oh my, I hope you are ok, how long has the swelling been going on for? Gosh you sound as if you are in a lot of pain?
I am still searching for an answer, on Preventer inhaler and ventolin inhaler as they testing for asthma even though the lung function tests points negative for asthma my peak flow is lower than what they want so I am on this preventer for 6 weeks now!
Let me know how they tablets work for you, hope you are ok x

Hi Helen
I hope you really do start to feel better & soon!
I have had pneumonia and I think my lungs were crackling even when I breathed! Did they not send you for a chest xray? x
