A little good news about total abdominal hysterectomy

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am on day one after my total abdominal hysterectomy.....i have read some reviews that scared the living daylights out of me.... I had one of the best obgyn around..... was in/out of surgery....no mishaps THANK THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.. ...I went into surgery around one and was brought to my room about 3pm....actual surgery was an hour per doc.....

I would say that female obgyns are a lot more careful when dealing with the female body....men are usual more rough....anyway I was in bed for the rest of the night learning pain tolerance....i had a morphine pump that I could press every 15 minutes.....because I slept a lot I didn't use much morphine.....i woke up on/off noticing I was able to tolerate the pain....on a scale of 10 my level was at a 7......i had a catheter in so no need to use the restroom....drank lots of liquids...broth and jello.....

In the AM my catheter was removed so I could use the restroom.....

Now that's when the pain was at a 10...trying to sit up on my own was hell.... learning how to use your stomach muscles again is hell and takes some getting used to.....i eventually made it to the bathroom I urinated with no issues.......seen a few blood clots....very small ones...no bleeding....didnt do #2 because I didn't have any solid foods for 24 hrs at that point.. ..now the gas in ur stomach can be hell....i was given gas pills and stool softeners.... any use of the abdominal area is painful....i still can't laugh or cough without pain.... no swift or sudden movements.... it took me 45 minutes to shower.... I walked around the hospital.... it seems like the more I walk the more mobile I become....i been testing bending down .. .still trouble.. I am doing a little at a time..... just wanted others to know that it was not bad as I thought or read... I no longer feel the pressure I had in my vaginal area as I did before my hysterectomy.... I had the surgery due to large uterus, multiple cyst and fibroids, heavy painful cycles...in bed for the 1st three days.....

Glad you have got through your surgery OK Lola.

No horror stories from me, my gyn was a man and I actually said to him when I saw him that I thought he waved a magic wand, I experienced no pain whatsoever after surgery, I didn't take one single pain killer, so all in all my experience was very positive.

      Omg great... phoebewhite

I am trying to take Myself off the pain pills so I am altering ibuprofen and Norcos...i get these sharp pains that come and go...i believe I am doing too much when I am on the pain medication because I don't feel anything and when I don't take the meds I feel the damage(sharp pains) that I have caused to myself ..the experience I have had with make gyn's have been the case I stated... I know all of them are not the same...again congrats....did you have the bikini cut incision? When was your surgery? Are you still swollen?

    Hi

I think one has to be careful in stereotyping.  Most medical specialists want to do the best for their patients and also want their reputation intact, irrespective whether they are male or female.  I had a young male consultant gynaecologist for my total lhysterectomy (not abdominal) in May.  A week after surgery I didn't even feel as if I'd had surgery.  I took only Paracetamol for a few days. I've had absolutely no complications but I did follow the instructions about not lifting for six weeks.  I had a woman gynaecologist many years ago when I was having a baby.  She'd had no children herself and although I went privately, I didn't find her any better than males.  In fact I've gone privately always to gynaecologists - had 3 men and all excellent.  One was a professor and into research so very supportive of HRT.

All the best for your journey.  Lyn

Ok lyn82834.... I am not into bashing anyone's reputation..... we all have opinions and experiences which this forum supports and I was just sharing mine..... There are some "dog on" great male gyn's in my area that have been doing their jobs successfully for 20+ years.... I just pefer a female....no harm intended.....my experience only...just giving a shout out to mine....

I don't take pain well....so I was definitely going to be taking something.... I had 3 natural birth children (all grown at this time) and didn't take any pain that required meds but this is no joke.....like said previously I am a very active person so I think my pain comes from doing too much too soon

Great news Lola, my experience was very similar to yours and I am now nearly three weeks down the road, I managing to go out for short walks every day, but I am still taking it very easy, definitely no lifting.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

    xx
