A little insight?

Hello, I just joined. My mother who is 57 and has always been in good health got sick 2 weeks ago. She was in the hospital for 2 days. They said she probably has COPD with an infection. She is now home. They gave her breathing treatments, but she seems just as bad. Its been 4 days. I am worried, because in November I watched my dad die of cancer and COPD. I am worried I will have to relive this. I hope its okay to be here not being a patient myself. I am just really scared right now. Is it bad her breathing hasn't improved yet? Any insight I would appreciate.

HI Amber........I am sorry about your Moms illness. Listening to people trying to breath is very stressful. I would say it's a little soon to worry. Let the medications do their job and then see after that. I have COPD with emphysema and am on oxygen 24/7. As long as I am sitting or lying still I seem to be fine. I advice a little help also with your caregiving. You need time to relax and for yourself also. Good Luck and GOD speed.

Hi Amber,
I take it she's been on anti-biotics since she was admitted to hospital? She should really be starting to feel better by now, I would have thought. Although, if she does have COPD, it might take longer. Only a spirometry test will determine whether she has it or not.
I think another visit to her GP would be the best bet. She might need a stronger antibiotic to shift the infection.
So sorry about your Dad .. but try not to worry. about your Mum. If she's never shown any symptoms of it before, chances are that even if she does have it, it will only be mild.
Good luck.
Jo

I would recommend you go with your Mother to see her doctor or have her doctor visit her at home if she is unable to go to the surgery.
If she has finished a course of ABs and Steroids and the chest infection has not cleared her doctor needs to investigate further.
I would think as your mother was in hospital a report would have gone back to her GP with recommendations on treatment or perhaps referral to a specialist
Hope your Mum is feeling better soon.

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't write back. I don't know much yet, but I get to visit with her tomorrow and will ask her all of these questions. She did go to the doctor and got a new inhaler. He did sound better. Thank you for all the support!
