After 2.5 days taking Trimethoprim my tongue & lips swelled up with so many blisters and mouth ulcers, felt really rotten with a fever... Face swelled up with red blotches - looked like a hampster! Unexplained painful red blotch on left hand.. went to a clinic on Boxing Day - Doctor said lucky I could still breathe properly!!! took anti-histamines - not much improvement, dosed up with Paracetamol, Difflam spray and Daktarin mouth gel. Still can't eat properly 6 days later!

DO THESE DRUGS NOT GET TESTED PROPERLY??? - Just read that it is a derivative of a Chemotherapy drug... who wants to take this further? ... then do reply to posting...

I've had a bad experience too. I also suffered the same symptoms 3 years ago. But the GP doubted that Trimethoprim was to blame. I stopped taking it and the symptoms started to subside within minutes but I was still very unwell for a few days. Within 20 minutes of taking it this time, I felt dizzy, unsteady on my feet and nauseous. Then within an hour I was vomiting and shaking uncontrollably. I've also had a rash, goosepimples, severe headache that lasted 3 days, limbs like lead. weakness (couldn't even lift a spoon), craving for fresh oranges, hallucinations, loss of appetite (I've been living off two oranges a day plus a couple of tablespoons of potato), inability to hold down water, loud ringing in my ears and a general inability to lift my head off the pillow. And this is all from just one tablet and counteracted by two anti-histamine tablets. I've heard these reactions are unusual. In fact, GPs and pharmacists tend not to have heard of any adverse reactions to this pill so meet these symptoms with scepticism. I think my shivery voice over the phone and the chattering teeth help convince my GP this time. I'm only starting to feel a little bit human 3 days after taking that single dose of Trimethoprin. sad

I had the exact same experience at Christmas. My dermatologist prescribed me trimethoprim for acne and a week after taking it I had a red rash covering me from head to toe. My rash turned purple and I still have a purple rash on my legs which hasn't cleared up yet. I had the reaction on 28th boxing day!! I took steroids and antihistamines but i still have a purple rash on my legs is this normal?

I know just how you felt. Only i had the same swelling underneath. Couldnt eat properly for a week. My lips , inside my mouth throat, tongue all had blisters . Dr seemed blase about the reaction. Mouth only just gone down. A burn like rash appeared on my body , still there - skin peeling like a snake. Thgis was my secon reaction to the horror drug.

    Hi

I was myself prescribed Trimethoprim yesterday, 08.02.10 and after taking just 1 tablet I suffered a severe allergic reaction. My doctor already knew that I was allergic to penicillin and did not mention anything about these tablets. Within 10 minutes I had the most awful pain in my head, my face and neck turned bright red and I lost my vision for about 15 minutes. I thought I was going to die.

I went straight back to my doctors and he told me that I had imagined the whole episode.

I am not happy with the way he treated me.

Yes I would like to take this further.

I would love to take it further but don't see how I can as the doctors are convinced Trimethoprim did not cause the constant pain that I am now in. What can we do? I believe my problems were caused by this horrible drug and would do anything in my power to get it removed from the market.
