a very encouraging result

Today is two weeks since undergoing the PAE procedure by my Interventionist Radiologist Dr. Glen Schlapoff at Liverpool Hospital Sydney.

I was led to making the decision to go down this path having elevated PSA results over a 2 year period during which time i had two multiple core biopsies catheter insertions etc. Results were no cancer but urine retention increased prostate size to 90cm and the usual 4-5 times urination during the night and with some sexual dysfunction.

Results to date are 1-2 visits to the toilet during the night greatly increased flow rates and with resulting improvement in sleep.Sexual activity has returned to normal pre prostate

problems. It is obviously early days however my improvements are very encouraging and in line with Dr. Shclapoffs advice.

Side effects are mainly to do with some discomfort in urination(burning)

sensation but that has largely almost gone.

I cannot be more positive with my experience and look forward to talking to anyone considering this course of treatment.

regards

Richard

Is the improved sexual function as a result of reduced prostate size or having stopped taking drugs prescribed for your prostate growth?

      Hi Derek,

I am still on flomax once a day, that is the only prostate drug i am taking.

I geuss its hard to state exactly whether its a combination of improved

blood flow, mental attitude, reduced prostate size ( flow rate has improved dramatically) much more sleep at this stage so its anybodies geuss, however i am not complaining

That is wonderful to hear, Richard.  I will be at two weeks on Wednesday since my PAE, so will report out on my results then, when catheter comes out.  YOur news is quite  encouraging news. (Footnote: My prostate was even larger than yours, at 130cm...but I wouldn't mention it in a presidential debate  smile    ).

      Thanks Lou,

Its a great feeling that when you back your decision to undertake this procedure that the results so far have been better than i could have expected

Was the IR able to embolize both sides? My improvements have been slow and steady, but my IR was only able to do one side.

      Hi Ramblin,

My IR was able to do both sides.

my improvement has been too say the least very encouraging with all

flow rates, side effects virtualy nil with the exemption of some burning

sensation on urination which was to be expected, only getting up 1-2 times during the night and sexual function returning to normal.

This is  two weeks since the procedure.

I hope you continue to improve

    Hi Richard

I read your post with feelingsof pure joy, thanks for taking the time to share. My best wishes to you for continued improvement on all counts.

I flew to Sydney from Melbourne last week to do the MRI etc and had a session with Dr Schlahof's assistant radiologist. Am waiting for them to give me date, no idea when that may be, hopefully within a month.

Was the procedure done under genaral or local anaesth ? Did you go home after 1 night in the hosp ? How many days till you were back to active/working daily life.

Hope you will pardon my somewhat excessive curiosity. Reply as much as you are comfortable doing.

I am on tamsulosin daily and would risk kidney damage without it, psa is only 0.81 prostate size was 54 cc estimated in ultra scan 2 wks ago.

As you can see, I am wating for the PAE date with great positive state but realistic expectations.

    Cheers

      Hi Rama,

The procedure was done under local anaesthesia and i went home the following day.

As Dr Schlapoff said to me before the procedure it takes generally about seven days for the discomfort (burning with urination) for things to return to normal.

I must admit i felt so well i probably did too much too soon so i would

advise patients to take it easy for a while after the procedure.

I am walking and swimming two weeks after without any bproblems.

My prostate size was 90cc before the procedure.

I am also a diabetic type 2 if that is of interest.

Good luck however you are in the best of hands.
