Hi. I probably can't help you much. Mine was open with mesh, an incisional hernia. Three days doesn't seem very long, in fact I was still in hospital then. I agree, coughing, sneezing and in my case retching/vomiting was really painful and stressful. BUT, that has mostly stopped now so I'm sure you will get better and happier as the days pass. Best wishes...

Thanks you , glad you are on the mend now,  it's just that no one tells you what to expect , just said don't lift heavy objects and don't drive for 6-8 weeks see you in clinic in 2 months , hopefully feel better soon thanks again

I agree. I was given lots of different advice, especially driving. Where I am you have to have an ok from a GP. Which I was given and today drove for the first time, 3 weeks after surgery. Quite nervous but ok. I see my surgeon on Friday which is under a month post op, but I think that's because everything stops near Christmas. Time for bed now, I had drains in for a while but now they are out it's much better for sleeping! Good luck.

I'd be asking for better pain relief if it was me.

My inguinal hernia has not been operated on yet so I can't help as a person with experience.  Sorry.  But I am interested in anything you have to tell us about your experience and I'm sure there's quite a few others would be, too.

For as you say there's little information given to us before the operation.

There are some, myself included, who'd very much like to avoid mesh surgery and are interested in the Desarda technique as practiced by Prof Desarda of India but typically it can't be found in Australia and many other places and the profession tells you nothing about it....

So we have to gather our own information.

Hearing from people such as yourself is valuable information. Please tell all if you feel inclined, any and every little thing can turn out to be of interest for it may reflect something happening or about to happen to someone else.

Get better pain relief is what I'd try to do. Coughing after abdominal hernia surgery!  Surely that'd be the worst possible thing?

Hi abrogard, thanks for your reply, I have not heard of desarda technique , just hopeing the mesh works for me , they say there is a 1in 20 chance of it coming back fingers crossed I'm not that 1, I had my gallbladder removed 3 months ago and have been on a low fat diet since I found out in March 2013 I had gallstones ,once again no doctor told me I had to be on low or no fat I found out for myself , and even now it's gone apparently you still have to be on the same diet, sorry for rambling on its just that because of this I lost a stone and a half which I think was good to go into this operation whiteout that excess weight ,I was in overnight ( I have other medical problems they neede to keep ther eye on) I was given morphine while I was in but told to take paracetamol and codeine at home which I am limiting the codeine because they bung you up and I really don't need that at the moment, I am stuck upstairs at the moment because it's to painful to go up and down although thinking I might give it another go today, I think a lot of the pain is the staples pulling every time you move feels like t I'm being ripped apart at times especially after you've been in one place for awhile ( sleeping) , coughing is the worse  soooo painful , I'm not the most patient of people I just want to get back to normal( we'll normal for me) and that can't come soon enough , I hope this reply helps if you need me to answer any more questions just ask .

hi birminghamcityf mine was to to appendix surgery but they had to go in from by below belly button down cos it was covered in an abscess and they Couldn't. Find my appendix ,hernia appeared about 8 weeks after surgery , it's been about 2 years now I have had it ,I looked about six months pregnant and for a women of my age (58) it's not a good look, one consultant said do you really want it done ( I was laying down at the time) I said yes I do and the sooner the better, and when I stood up he said ahh yes  it protruding quite a lot we will get you into surgery as soon as possible there is suppose to be a 18 week pathway in the NHS it's a joke , apparently there is a 1 in 20 chance of it coming back , hope this helps

Hi Christine sorry to read you are still suffering. I know it will seem strange but I am going into hospital for an endoscopy this Wednesday and I just hope they find a HH as I have had so much pain it will be a relief to know its nothing more sinister.

By what I have read of yours and others experiences though it seems it could just be the start of a difficult time if it is.

I just want to be able to get out there and be able to cycle like I once could.

Anyway enough of me you just take it easy and I hope you recover quickly. Ted

Hi Ted, I also have a hiatus hernia ( if this is what you meant) if you read my post to abrogard, I mention about being on low fat / no fat diet due to gall stones , since being on this diet  I  noticed my HH is so much better virtually symptom free, it might be worth giving it a go ' as I know just how painful this can be , I do understand your worry , we all think the worse , and I wish you all the good luck for your results and hopefully it won't be to long before your out cycling again ,chris
