Abdominal Mesh

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have had 4 abdominal surgeries since 2014 ..with my last being in July 2015 . I had surgery for a perforated colon , then a reversal and 2 Hernia's ... I still suffer every day with pain when I over do anything , including sitting for too long . I'm breaking out with these huge ulcer like sores on my legs , in which I have seen a group of doctors for including a dermatologist and an Infectious disease doctor . The doctors have no clue why I'm getting these sores ? Then I did some research online , which can always be misleading and stumbled on that when Surgical Mesh becomes infected one of the side effects are boils or sores on your legs , which I have now . I also read that this can be very dangerous to leave the mesh in your body because of the toxins movin to areas in your body which can effect vital organs . I'm very upset about reading this online and thought I would reach out to the public for any kind of assistance with this issue ?

    Hi there,

I’m very sorry for all you’ve been through.

But please don’t rely on what you read online, there are just heaps of cr** especially when it comes to the word “toxines”.

Having said that, sure mesh can (and does) cause problems. Most are OK with it, some unfortunately aren’t and end up looking for solutions (or even removal) of the mesh altogether (not always feasible/possible).

Regarding infection, it’s unlikely you have an ongoing infection since your last surgery in 2015, it would have caused serious problems if you had cought a bug after surgery. But nothing is black or white in medicine and since you clearly have ongoing cronic issues I’d pester your GP until you are seen by other docs. You might want to consult a rheumatologist for example.

I guess you must have had a lot of blood work done. Maybe seeing a differently oriented specialist with some fresh bloodwork might help.

That helps bro ... Thank you for the reply .. I have had a lot of blood work done , in which nothing came up besides a possible blood disorder , in which my doctor told me to see another specialist because of the longevity of my issue . I'm going to call that doctor back to get exactly what he called it . Besides the ulcers or boils , I still have a bunch of pain , in which I received an MRI , only to find ZIP ? 56 Year old man who can't do a whole lot without pain from these surgeries ... Very depressed ...Thank you again !!

I can't help you with the sores but I know for a fact the mesh causes pain in a lot of people. I actually had mine removed and the hernia fixed by non-mesh means. It changed my life. Before I was depressed and in pain and I'm pretty much close to normal human being now.

Hope they can figure out what's going on with your legs! Sorry about all that, I know how much it sucks.

I really want to get the mesh removed , believing it the cause of my pain . I read online that this can be several surgeries for full removal of the mesh ? Did you get yours removed in one surgical  procedure  ? If so , where did you have your surgery , if you don't mind me asking ? I can call them up and ask for a recommendation ....Glad you are getting relieve !!! I'm so ready to heal , trust me ... Feel hopeless ... Appreciate the reply !

It was one surgery. I can't speak for your mesh though. I had an umbilical hernia with a rather large mesh put in.

Are you in the UK? I had the surgery at KIMS hospital in Maidstone. The surgeon was Mr Simon Bailey: https://www.mtw.nhs.uk/consultant/mr-simon-bailey/

He's very open about options and no BS when it comes to most things. He'll give you an honest assessment and help.
