About time to be more medically savvy.

I do feel from reading, and on occasion responding to various enquiries posted, that the majority of those asking the questions,  may do well to consult the numerous and often excellent free sites providing a wealth of scientifically verified information on health and disease.

I understand some may be a little technical, but generally they are designed to be read by the lay person with little medical understanding. The places to be avoided at all cost are those wanting to sell you a product or service, or those who propose some bull***t pseudoscientific theory. Stick to conventional and look for something analogous to the N.H.S for guidance, it may be a bit behind the latest innovations, but that is no bad thing. How often have I heard about the wonder silver bullet only to learn later it did poorly in clinical trials. Also beware anyone ignoring the evidence, it is not perfect, but is it still the best way we have sorting the valuable from the junk.

It is all available here for those who take the trouble to look beyond the Forums and you look to see who runs the site. Look to the right for related information or search top right and each lead you to medical advice and medical articles aimed at doctors as well as patients.

Yes Derek76, that may be true. I use it myself, but I feel it safe to say that rather than consult with other patients on their conditions, for what is at best anecdotal evidence, it would be better to check with " Patient.info " and a couple of other reliable evidence based sources of medical information for a better understanding of ones condition. It may also be wise if in any doubt, rather than ask your doctor for a second opinion, to check these same sites to see if you can get a better understanding of what ails you.

Beware polypharmacy and taking too many pills and potions, reduce all medicines, including vitamins and other over-the-counter products to the absolute minimum. Such changes require a discussion with doctor and pharmacist.

From your wording I'm not sure if you realise that this is the patient info site.

This organisation is also responsible for the software that runs GP surgeries in England.

If you contact them they may invite your opinions of their UK GP's system.
